HERRERA BABr 3-1D BROADCAST PROGRAMMING

Radio Monitoring
Duration: 4 hrs
Station: 99.5 Play FM

Day 1

On the first day of my monitoring, I decided to monitor between 7:00 pm to 11:00

pm. Prior to the monitoring proper, my initial hypothesis is that it will just be music playing

for the entire 4 hours since it is the time of the night that the people are either sleeping or

were just about to sleep. I was right.

I started at 7:00 pm. The theme of the music program is new music hits, so the set

of songs that are playing are songs that are most charted on music charts and most

requested by listeners. In the first hour, there were about 16 songs played. Occasionally,

the program bumper and OBB plays in between songs.

It was all the same during the second and third hour. There were 19 songs played

overall between 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm and 18 between 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm. At 8:49, a

commercial was played, it was Play FM’s own promotion of their mobile application.

There is no significant change until the last hour. 17 songs were played, and still

no commercial. This time there are few songs that were repeated, 2 to be exact. There is

also an unfamiliar Tagalog song (this is subjective, I may not have heard the song before)

that is played in between international songs.

Overall, the average song played during the 4 hours I listened to is 18 songs. The

results also show that commercials are seldomly played in this station or maybe just in

this timeslot.

Day 2
On day 2, I decided to monitor in an earlier time slot so that I can examine more
on the overall programming of Play FM in a whole day. I listened between 4:00 pm to 8:00
to see what time the program was being aired.
Unlike the first day, the theme of the program that I was able to catch up to is
throwback songs. I also found out, as I have heard in program bumper, that this program
is only aired during thursdays.
As expected in a musical program, the whole first hour consists entirely of songs,
16 as I counted. I notice that there are more commercials this time, compared to day 1. I
heard 2 commercials for the whole hour, it was Play FM’s promotional ad again.
Between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm, I noticed something different. First, there were
fewer songs (13 songs) — although this may be because some songs are longer than
the others. But it was noticeable that the program bumper/stinger is played more
frequently. There is also a program bumper that is sponsored.
In the next two hours, the amount of songs were back at their normal counts.
Between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm, there were 15 songs played, while between the last hour
there were 16 songs. There are also one or two commercials that were played.
To summarize it all, the average number of music that are played in this timeslot
is 15 songs. Moreover, from the result of this day 2 monitoring, I can conclude that this
station is highly saturated with music, although it was too early to presume.

Day 3
During this day, I wasn’t able to choose a time because of my busy schedule. That’s
why I have no choice but to listen to almost the same time slot with my day 1 and 2
monitoring — between 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
It was already day 3, but still, the program was the same, it was a musical program
again. This time, the theme was version 2 of some popular songs.
It was no different to day 1 and 2. The first two hours were just again song after
songs. Between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm, there are 17 songs played, 1 commercial and a
1-minute program bumper. Meanwhile, between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm, 16 songs were
played and no commercials at all.
In the third hour, there were more and longer commercials than before. At 8:18 a
paid commercial aired. A few songs later, there was a 2 minute program OBB +
commercial by the station. Despite this, the songs played were still, on average, 16 songs.
Finally, the very last hour ended with 17 songs and one station promotional
material.
Overall, the average of all the songs played in an hour during this time slot is 17
songs. The results of this monitoring proves my hypothesis true. Play FM really is
saturated with music. The structure of their programs is primarily dependent on music.
When I started this monitoring, I was expecting that there would be some DJ or so that
would facilitate the whole program, even if it’s a music show. I may conclude that there
were very few people employed in this station since it was just mostly music, they require
less manpower or none at all. I guess this could be inferred from the fact that the station
is targeted really for audiences that are solely listening to music.
