The Angry Fish

There was once a fish who lived in a pond. The pond was in a park. The
water was clean. The fish and its friends liked the pond very much. It was their
home.
Every day, people would come to the park. Some came for a stroll;
others had picnics. However, some careless and inconsiderate people began to
throw rubbish into the pond. Slowly the pond became dirty.
The pond was now full of empty bottles, cans wrappers and old
newspapers. The fish in the pond became angry.
One day, a man threw a can into the water. The fish swam up to him and
said, “You are so cruel. You treat our home as a dustbin. Now our beautiful
home is gone. Keep our pond clean”. The man was so shocked by the talking
fish that he ran away.
The next day, some workers came and cleaned up the pond. The fish and
his friends were delighted.

The Slippery Floor

It was a rainy day. Peter and I sought shelter at the bus interchange
because we had no umbrellas. I saw many people queuing to top up their fare
cards. Some people were waiting for the bus and others were seeking shelter
like us.
I saw an old woman carrying a bag of fruits and an umbrella. She closed
her umbrella as she reached the interchange. However, the ground was wet
and slippery. The old woman had only taken few steps when she suddenly
slipped. As she fell down, her bag of fruits was sent flying. Peter and I ran up to
help her up. To our surprise, two other people also fell. They had stepped on
some oranges. The woman apologized to them. We ran after the oranges and
picked them up.
While I was running, I almost slipped too. Fortunately, I keep my
balance, otherwise, I would have to go home with a pet patch on my shorts.
That would certainly be an embarrassing sight.

Just How Fast?

Things around us have speed, and this varies greatly. Consider for
example, the speed of a glacier, an animal, a bird, a hydroplane or a racing car.
Observe too, the wind in a tornado, sound, light or the Earth.

The glacier which is a frozen river of snow, moves less than one foot in
an entire day. A box turtle travels about ten feet in a minute, while a snail
travels five inches in an hour.

A bird called Chimney Swift can fly almost ninety miles per hour. This is
the fastest speed recorded for any living creature.

A hydroplane skims across the top of the water at neatly 300 miles an
hour. Some types of racing cars travel more than 500 miles per hour. The wind
in a tornado may have a speed at 600 miles per hour, but sound waves are
faster with the speed up to 740 miles per hour.
The earth moves around the sun at 67,000 miles per hour. Light is faster
at 186,000 miles in only one second. No material thing in the universe can
travel faster than this. Science has nothing yet to surpass this speed.

Diving

The sea has always interested people. From it they can get food., minerals and
treasures. For thousands of years, people sailed on the sea. They have used many of its
resources. But they could not go far beneath its surface. Nowadays, it is only through diving
that people can explore the sea. But how do divers stay underwater?

A diver who wants to stay underwater for more than few minutes must breathe air
or a special mixture of gases. He can wear diving suits and have air pumped to him from
above. Or he can carry tanks of air on his back and breathe through a hose and a
mouthpiece.

The diver’s body is under great pressure in deep water because water weighs 800
times as much as air. Tons of water push against diver deep in the sea. When this happens,
his blood takes in some of the gases he breathes.

When the diver rises to the surface, the water pressure becomes less. But if he rises
too quickly, the gases in his blood from bubbles that make breathing difficult. Consequently,
a diver suffers from bends causing a diver to double up in pain. It can even kill him.
