Exercise 1: Topic: Nuclear energy
Nuclear was discovered long time ago. In order to show the advanced technology,
the US used nuclear power as the most dangerous weapon to threaten humankind.
For example, in 1945 the US decided to test the first nuclear bomb in Hiroshima
and thousands of people were killed immediately. After that horrible event, people
who were interested in peace tried to protest against the way the US used nuclear
power as a mass-killing weapon.
=> The paragraph is on the topic of nuclear energy and their destructive power.
Students give an evidence of the American bombing at Hiroshima in 1945 to show
the devastation and the dangers of nuclear weapons to humankind.
Exercise 2: Topic: Drinking-driving
a. In society, living standard is improving day by day. There are a lot of motors
and cars... in the streets. In fact, we have to face some problems of motorists
and drivers. You, know, many accidents happen everyday, and it causes
death and a traffic jam. Main reasons here are carelessness and wine. Many
drivers and motorists drank much wine and they couldn't control their speed
and themselves. Some of them are careless, they want to come to their office
quickly, they drive at high speed. That's why accidents happen everywhere.
Personally, I think governments have to give out strict laws to punish
careless drivers.
=> The paragraph about some problems of motorists and drivers in traffic . It
is carelessness and drinking which leads to daily accidents, fatalities and
traffic congestion. The students argued that governments have to give out
strict laws to punish careless drivers. However, this point of view is too
general and not come up with solutions that really reasonable.

b. It is very dangerous for everybody if s/he drives after having drunk alcohol.
Driving demands us to be conscious and patient or calm whereas alcohol or
any drink with gas makes people excited and unconscious. Alcohol,
therefore, is the main cause of many traffic accidents. Drink-driving should
be awared (?) as the enemy of drivers. If you are offered a drink before
driving, try your best to refuse it otherwise you may get troubles from
policemen or from your driving- yourself.

=> The paragraph about alcohol are the main cause of the accidents. Firstly,
students give out the causes and harms of drinking alcohol while in traffic,
and then give advice and solutions for the driver to avoid trouble from the
police or from their driving- themselves.

Exercise 3: Analyse the topic framework of the following passages:

3.1. A thousand years ago, when mankind approached the end of the first
millennium, some people prayed, some people thought the world was
coming to an end - and the vast majority thought nothing of it at all because
they had very little grasp of the calendar. Today, things are a bit different.
Hotels around the globe are already booked for the Big Night (Yes, of
course it’ll be New Year’s Eve, 199, not a year later), the champagne is laid
away (buy now and avoid the shortage)- you can almost hear the deafening
pre-echo of the Hoopla to End All Hooplas. It’s fitting, in a way, that our
overwhelming instinct is to party.

=> Topic framework: Human instinct to party over time, especially

when humans hit the lane of the first millennium.
3.2. My fellow Americans, you were very good to me in 1992. But you took
me on faith and the words of others. When I said to you that we could create
an America in the 21st century with opportunity for everyone responsible
enough to work on it, where we were coming together and respecting our
diversity instead of being torn apart by it, where we were still leading the
world toward peace and freedom and prosperity, you took me on faith. But
after four years of working for opportunity, responsibility and a stronger
community, you don't have to do that anymore. The evidence is in, and now
we know.
Now we know, with 10.5 million more jobs, a record number of new small
businesses and the census report last week telling us. I almost wept when I
read it. Who ever heard of crying over a dry government report? But every
year they tell us how we did the year before.

=> Topic framework: Renovating the United States in a condition of

peace, freedom and strong development.
Exercise 4:
The Ant and the Grasshopper On one fine summer's day in a field a
Grasshopper was hopping about in a musical mood. An ant passed by
bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest. The
grasshopper invited the ant to sit for a chat with him. But the ant refused
saying that "I’m storing up food for winter". " Why don’t you do the same?"
asked the ant to the grasshopper. "Pooh! Why bother about winter?" said the
Grasshopper; we have got enough food at present." But the Ant went on its
way and continued its toil. Finally, when winter came, the Grasshopper
found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing corn and grain
from their storage. Then the Grasshopper understood that… It is best to
prepare for the days of necessity.
