Collision Avoidance – Interference Check

Effectivity: Aircraft with a TAS/TCAS system installed with a Bendix/King Silver

Crown DME (Models KN62, 63 or 64).

Service Letter SL-253 supersedes Service Bulletin SB#77.

Reason: To inform customers that the Bendix/King Silver Crown DME (Models
KN62, 63 or 64) is interfering with the operation of TAS/TCAS systems.

Description: Some TAS/TCAS installations could experience interference from the

Bendix King Silver Crown DME’s KN62, 63, and 64 if the DME is
channeled to 112.3 MHz on the Nav receiver. The interference will cause
the TAS/TCAS system to fail or degrade performance and subsequently log
errors in the fault log.
If the following failures are logged in the fault log an interference check
should be preformed.
• SKY497 Error 17, RF Amplitude
• SKY899 Error 14, RF Amplitude
• TRC791 Error Top Antenna RF Reply BITE Failure, Too Few BITE
Replies Received
To verify the interference tune the NAV/COM to 112.3 with the DME on or
in standby. If the TAS/TCAS fails, then the source of the interference is the
Bendix/King Silver Crown DME (Models KN62, 63 or 64). Bendix/King
does not have a correction for this interference and the failure is not related
to the TAS/TCAS processor or antenna.

approved configuration and therefore does not require government or other
regulatory agency approval.
