Traffic Advisory Systems and Ghost Targets

Effectivity: SKY497, SKY899 and TCAS791 installations.

Reason: There have been rare incidents of ghost targets when the SKY497, SKY899 or
TCAS791 traffic advisory systems have been installed in aircraft with the
Bendix/King KT76A transponder.

Description: The ghost targets appear only on aircraft equipped with the Bendix/King KT76A
transponder that have serial numbers between 15,000 and 110,000 (serial numbers
14,999 and less have no suppression circuitry). The targets may be caused by a
suppression bus anomaly that allows the transponder to reply to interrogations from
the traffic advisory system. The problem can be resolved by connecting a pull down
resistor between the suppression bus and ground.

Approval: This Service Memo contains no modification information that revises the approved
configuration and therefore does not require governmental or other regulatory agency
approval.

ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

When connecting a SKY497, SKY899 and TCAS791 to the Bendix/King KT76A (with serial number
less than 110,000) transponder suppression bus add a 10K to 50K (value not critical) 1/4 watt
(minimum) pull down resistor between the suppression bus and ground. The resistor may be located at
any point on the bus and should be connected to airframe or chassis ground.
