Title: An emotional/sensorial travel around Palermo.

Exercise: 1 hour walking around Ballaro area, informal mapping activities and borders students
detected while they walk. We have 3 stops where we will present different migrant situations
and ask participants to express their feelings.

Before start

We explain to the students the definition of informal activities.

Methodology at every stop

1. Albergheria market

We arrive to the place. We ask them to take a moment to observe, map down the informal
activities and think two words that come to your mind.

Situation 1: As a migrant in a new country the area where you can afford to live is very
polluted and full of trash. How would you feel? Option 2: question c

Open questions for the final debate

Which kinf of people did you see consuming and selling stuff?

Were you considered the activities you saw honest or dishonest?

As a visitor did you feel safe?

As a seller would you feel protected?

Positive:

a) You are a migrant in another country which you don’t speak the language, you go to
crowded place, no one speak your language and you want to communicate with the
bus driver or an authority. This person talks to you in the language you don’t
understand, someone on the bus raise his hand and helped you translating.
b) Imagine you are a Muslim woman wearing your hijab, you obtain a job, but you are
worried to loose it because one of your friends was fired because using a hijab. When
you talk to your boss he saids that is totally ok because he understands that is your
faith, religion, and there is no problem.
c) Imagine you go to another country and you find a community from your country of
origin, and you attend to weekly meetings and they help you integrating
d) I can easily use my talent in this country.

Partially positive

e) You arrive to Palermo as a legal migrant, you find your way to get some money but you
haven’t found a job yet.. You feel people are welcoming to you, they don’t
discriminate you. How would you feel?
f) You arrive to Palermo as a legal migrant, you are going to a country to another,
starting a new life, you are able to find jobs, but you perceive strong discrimination
against you and your religion (beliefs, culture, etc). How would you feel?
