Learning Activity #1

PUTTING A TEST TO THE TEST

Objective:
To experience firsthand what is involved in gathering information and making
decisions about a psychological test.
Background:
● Test catalogs, test manuals, test reviews, and published research on
psychological tests can help prospective users make informed decisions
regarding such instruments and procedures. To answer questions such as “is
this test appropriate for this use with this population? Test users need more
than intuition; they need facts.

Your task:

You are a psychologist employed in a university counselling center. The Dean has
decided that the university is going to build and operate a community child daycare
center. The Dean has placed you in charge of hiring all of the caretakers at the center.
Further, the Dean wonders aloud whether all serious candidates for jobs at the new
center should be screened for psychopathology with a test called the Minnesota
Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2-RF). The Dean asks you to report back
with your written opinion regarding the pros and cons of using the MMPI-2-RF for
this purpose.

1. What sources would you use to gather information to respond to the dean’s
mandate?
2. What questions would you hope to have answered in your sources about the
MMPI-2-RF?
3. What other types of tests or assessment procedures might you wish to include
in the process of hiring daycare workers? Why?
4. Write your report to the Dean?

1. I prefer to utilize test manuals, professional books, as well as reference volumes.

Test manuals provide a standardized sample and useful information regarding the

Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-

RF). In the test manuals, it includes theory, limitations, and also the quality of the

test that will conduct to the candidates. Further us to know if this test is more

applicable to the candidates and if MMPI-2-RF is appropriate to administer to the

caretakers. I would also like to use professional books to give insights to the

experience of other professionals who administer the MMPI-2-RF and how the

administrators gave the interpretation, scoring, and how they administer the test.

In addition to the sources that I’ve mentioned, I would also like to use reference

volumes to have sights to all the consumer’s feedback to the test and if MMPI-2-

RF has high validity. If all of these sources are correct, it will determine and have

more meaningful information to give accurate results to respond to the Dean’s

mandate regarding the hiring of caretakers.

● What is a unique feature of MMPI-2-RF that makes it a more high-quality

test?

3. I wish to add another type of test that might help, which is the personality test.

Personality test measures the personality and characteristics of a person who may

be a big help to know if the candidate suffers a mental illness that can affect the

children from a daycare center or he or she is fully qualified as a caretaker.

According to Cherry (2020), personality testing and assessment refer to

techniques designed to measure the characteristic patterns of traits that people

exhibit across various situations. Personality tests can be used to help clarify a

clinical diagnosis, guide therapeutic interventions, and help predict how people

may respond in different situations. We must be careful and critical when

choosing a caretaker because of the children. Children can imitate what they see

in the adults and project it into themselves. The protection of the children is a

must when it comes to their surroundings, environment, and people that they

interact with.

Greetings!

It was a pleasure to be reached out regarding this kind of topic. Upon your

request concerning employing all the caretakers at the center, I would love to describe

the essence of MMPI-2- and the opportunities and impediments that the personality

test has.

The MMPI was updated several times and revised to improve the test’s

validity and reliability where the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2

Restructured Form or the MMPI-2-RF provides more convenience because it is a

shorter, psychometrically improved, clinically significant version of the test to

modernize the MMPI. Yossef Ben-Porath and Auke Tellegen MMPI-2-RF, and it was

published in August 2008. According to Wygant (2018), MMPI-2-RF was 338 items

includes 51 scales, nine validity scales, 3 Higher-Order Scales, 9 Restructured

Clinical Scales, two interest scales, 5 PSY-5 scales and 23 Specific Problems Scales to

be specific of this it contains 5 somatic/cognitive, 9 internalizing, 4 externalizing and

5 interpersonal. MMPI-2-RF is based on the normative sample of MMPI-2, but unlike

the MMPI-2, the Restructure Form uses non-gendered norms and its normative

sample that consists, an equal number of men and women drawn from the individuals.

According to Cherry (2020), the MMPI-2-RF contains 338 true or false questions and

takes around 35 to 50 minutes to finish, and it is designed for the 18 and above

individuals to be qualified.

All the test has it is own strengths and weaknesses, as well as MMPI-2-RF. I

will use bullets to emphasize the strengths and weaknesses of MMPI-2-RF.

Strengths:

● MMPI-2-RF has a solid empirical foundation that allows us to interpret and score

that is inclined to the modern, contemporary, up to date literature and relative ease of

use of the instrument. (Ben-Porath, 2016).

● Using MMPI-2-RF, it has very comprehensive, interpretative guidelines in the

test material. If the user follows these guidelines, it can provide the user with reliable

and efficient interpretations.

● MMPI-2-RF is shorter than MMPI-2, which is more convenient for the test taker,

and it will not take a lot of time.

● The newer version of MMPI-2 RF is most suitable for interpreting the rest results

than MMPI-2 because its clinical scales have been altered to align with current

psychological issues, reflecting the modern understanding of psychological problems

(Course Hero, 2020; Tellegen & Porath, 2011).

Weaknesses:

● The two creators notice the loss of data from Clinical Scale code types as a

common disadvantage of the MMPI-2-RF.

● (Ben-Porath, 2012; Butcher, 2010) the assertion that the MMPI-2-RF manuals

do not provide information necessary to explore this question is also incorrect.
