Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Modern technologies and the beginning of machines followed by the smart

system of data and information have now influence the humankind in the 21st century.

Computers, systems and software make easier to do everyday task, and it is impractical to

envision the new era’s life could be control without them. Moreover, technology which

makes together tools to promote development, and has as its main purpose of the solving

of many problems of mankind. Technology in economy reaches out the thing that this are

the key driver of economic growth of countries, regions, and cities. It advances allows for

the more efficient production of better goods and services. Information in community

development is to give power and a voice to people within the larger ecosystem. A simple

solution, such as providing information to the community through transformation of data

devices that highlights the role of technology that plays in accelerating development.

Ecosystems organize the network that drives the creation and delivery of information

technology products and services that defined by core components made by the platform

owner and complemented applications. Through innovation, they produce or invented a

machine that seem like a living creature that is operated by a wheel and it is operated by a

computer or programmable device that perform actions and transmit as a moving object.

According to Royakkers and Est (2015), the study of new robotics is driven by

two long-term engineering ambitions. Firstly, there is the engineering dream of building

machines that can move and act autonomously in complex and unstructured

environments. Secondly, there is the dream of building machines that are capable of

social behavior and have the capacity for moral decision making. Moreover, there is a

thing that can help the environment to protect different areas such as home, health care,

traffic, and companies in terms of disinfection. Others are favor with the implementation

of robots and technologies that can save workers from performing dangerous task,

meanwhile robots are criticized due to rising of technological creature that people have

been replace from being a worker or employee that progress the time to pursue the

advantages and disadvantages of robots. Somehow new robotics no longer concerns only

factor applications, but also the use of robotics in a more complex and unstructured

outside world, that numerous human activities, such as caring for the sick, making love,

and killing people due to the use of military sector that led into change of society cause of

advancement of war technology.

The possibilities of robot sovereignty and the potential aspects have been named

in community and may be a genuine concern in the future that expectedly to be more on

information technology. Otherwise implementing a robot that has something to do with

the economy saves life especially in times of pandemic that virus is needed the ways

of disinfection using robots to avoid contamination to the society. In pursuing

disinfecting patrol robot, its expanse forces to the benefits of the robot in assisting

frontliners to measure the effectiveness of disinfecting robot in environment. In spite of

pandemic or corona virus disease 2019, many of people have been invented or

implemented disinfecting robots to slow down the transmission of the virus and to get rid

of them like the drone disinfectant that government accelerated the labor of gambling

disinfecting robots.

In addition, Reagan (2020) the disinfectant drones can spray over large facilities

such as stadiums and ballparks, or indoor buildings such as jails and government offices.

Company officials hope customers will see the value in using a single drone flight to

disinfect an area rather than having to spend more time and money hiring several human

cleaners. As stated by Eaglehawk (2020) many of their clients are responsible for keeping

their facilities safe and clean, especially during these unprecedented times. Furthermore,

University of Santo Tomas (2020) announce a call for proposals immediate response to

COVID 19 pandemic and design the new model to be multi-functional, meaning the robot

will not only be a remote-controlled telepresence robot, but can also be used to disinfect

bacteria/viruses in a room. Although this automation can gain more productivity in the

future and minimize the risk of frontliners or workers that can become more positive

ways through the war against pandemic.

In addition, Avidbots (2020) Many experts have come to understand how novel

coronavirus spreads an infected person coughs or sneezes producing droplets that are

sprayed onto their surroundings. Depending on where that person is, surfaces can include

doorknobs, light switches, walls, doors, and the floor or pathways. When it comes to

cleaning it is important to focus our disinfecting efforts on high-touch surfaces that begin

spending as much time sanitizing the floors on a regular basis as it is cleaning other

areas. 

Moreover, M Tech-Ideas (2020) Many Indian Inventors using Arduino made the

ideas and process of making the title Automatic Plant Watering system using Arduino

Uno and water pump (Via Bluetooth Controlled) that the project proposes in YouTube

where the ideas begin to improve more by the innovators.

General Objectives

To determine the effectiveness of using prototype disinfecting patrol robot.

Specific Objectives

The purpose of this study is to gain additional information related with the

effectiveness of prototype disinfecting patrol robot.

Specifically, the following objectives are drawn:

1. To describe the disinfecting patrol robot in terms of

1.3 advantages to the frontliners and teachers;

1.4 project objectives;

1.5 materials and equipment;

1.6 market value;

1.7 mobility;

1.7 application; and

1.8 appearance.

2. To determine the efficiency of the prototype disinfecting patrol robot.

3. To determine the effectiveness of prototype disinfecting patrol robot as

evaluated by an expert.

Significance of the Study

The goal of this study is to identify the effectiveness of using prototype

disinfecting patrol robot. The findings may serve as basis for future researcher, and it will

be beneficial to the school, frontliners, individuals, and innovators.

To the Future Researchers. This study will serve as a basis and guidelines for

future researchers who will conduct a study regarding robotics. This study will provide

basic information to them upon researching about robots.

To the Innovators. This study will provide them a basis on creating robots that

helps in assisting with a certain daily task. It will also challenge their innovative skills

and it will make them create more advanced products that are beneficial to the people and

to the community.

To the School. This study will be a guide for them to offer enhancements

programs especially to the students who are interested to take STEM strand. This will

also motivate students to have further study and research on robotics. Furthermore, it

helps the abilities to develop, promote integration in society and to empower robotics.

To the Frontliners. This study will provide them benefits on assisting frontliners

with a certain daily that support the global public health community’s work to keep

people safe and informed during the crisis or pandemic.

To the Individuals. The prototype disinfecting patrol robot will be beneficial to

them in disinfecting pathways. It will also promote robotics to the individuals and

encourage them to engage themselves with robotics. Furthermore, the presence of the

prototype disinfecting patrol robot will inspire aspiring individuals especially those who

have passion with technologies specifically with robots. With that, the individuals can be

more innovative than before and train themselves to be an innovative person.

Scope and Delimitation

The research study is limited to facilities in assisting the frontliners and it covers

Camiling Catholic School, Inc. A Licensed Electrical Engineer has assessed the product,

in addition to that, five (5) science teachers and ten (10) faculty teachers were asked to

evaluate and give remarks regarding with the prototype disinfecting patrol robot.

Definition of Terms

To have a common understanding on the study, the researcher defined the

following terms:

Arduino Uno. The researcher used Arduino uno R3 that enables the prototype

disinfecting patrol robot read inputs from the sensor and turn it into an output such as

activating it.

Battery. A device that stores electrical energy in the form of chemical energy and

convert that energy into electricity (Antoine Allanore). This will be needed in this study

that supply the necessary energy that enables the robot and the water pump to function.

Disinfecting Substance. Disinfecting substance are chemical agents applied to

non-living objects in order to destroy microorganism such as bacteria and viruses.

Moreover, EPA (2020) found that there are two Lysol products that can kill Coronavirus.

HC-05 Bluetooth Module. The HC-05 Bluetooth SPP (Serial Port Protocol)

module designed for transparent wireless serial connection setup. The Bluetooth Module

can be used in a master of slave configuration, making it a great solution for wireless

communication such as mobile or cellphone controller via Bluetooth.

Prototype Disinfecting Patrol Robot. Prototype Disinfecting Patrol Robot is the

main product in this study wherein it will be beneficial in disinfecting pathways and

facilities. The robot will also showcase its patrolling ability in pathways.

Tool of Evaluation. In this study, it was used by the evaluators in giving points

on the different aspects of the prototype disinfecting patrol robot to determine its

effectiveness. Moreover, Dange (2020) states the tools and techniques of evaluation in

higher education. The table is shown below on how the product will be evaluated.

Figure 1 illustrates the Input Process Output (IPO) Model which will be used in

the study. It is a diagram consist of all the materials, procedures, information that are

needed for the process and the resulting product which is the result of the process made.

Figure 2 shows the structure of the section where the project gains the ability to

disinfect pathways. In addition, this figures also illustrates the wirings and the parts used

for the project to gain the ability to disinfect. The water pump will serve as the

deliverance of the disinfecting substance through pipes with the pressurize nozzle that

spreads the substance to pathways. Furthermore, the power source will be connected the

water pump together with the on/off switch which serves the start and kill switch for the

water pump. Moreover, the power source was the 2 18650 battery mounted to the 2-cell

battery holder with the positive and negative wirings in which the positive wire will be

connected to the on/off switch and directly to the water pump, while the negative wire

will be directed to the water pump. In addition, the 18650 battery is rechargeable where

the charging time is about 4 hours, while it can use it for 3-5 hours.

Figure 3 reveals the schematic diagram of the Arduino Bluetooth car receiver.

This consists of the HC-05 bluetooth module, the L293D motor shield, the 2 motors and

wheels, a PCB universal board, on/off switch, and the power source that has a 6 to 12v

potential difference. This is the part which enables the robot to move wirelessly by

receiving data from the bluetooth controller. The HC-05 bluetooth module will be the

one to process all the data transfer coming from the bluetooth controller. The HC-05

bluetooth module or the bluetooth receiver that has 6 pin that will be connected to the

female stackable connector that this is the power input of the HC-05 bluetooth module

which powers it up. Moreover, the 6-pin female stackable of the HC-05 module will be

connected to the PCB universal board through the arduino uno R3 which will help the

module receive data wirelessly. Moreover, the module supports from approximately 4-6V

supply voltage.

Furthermore, these 6 pins have pin name which are the enable key, this pin is used

to toggle between data mode (set low) and AT command mode (set high). By default, it is

in data mode. Vcc powers the module. Ground pin of module connect to system ground

which follows through the stackable female connector and PCB universal board. TX

transmitter or Transmits Serial Data, everything received via Bluetooth will be given out

this pin as serial data. RX Receiver or Receive Serial Data, every serial data given to this

pin will be broadcast via Bluetooth. State pin is connected to on board LED, it can be

used as a feedback to check if Bluetooth is working properly. In addition, the LED

indicates the status of the module, blink once in 2 seconds: module has entered command

mode, repeated blinking: waiting for connection in data mode, and if it blinks twice in 1

second: connection successful in Data Mode. Moreover, button used to control the

key/enable pin to toggle between data and command mode.

Furthermore, the wire of the motor driver will be connected to the motor 2 (+/-)

and motor 3(+/-) pin that enables the connection to the Arduino uno R3 through the

module with TX Transmitter pin. Moreover, the power or energy source of the receiver

will be connected to the Motor Power External Pin (+/-) of the motor driver.

Figure 3.2 shows the structure of the section where the project gains the ability to

cooperate with humans through speech. In addition, this figure also illustrates the wirings

and the parts used for the project to gain the ability to talk. The Arduino uno will serve as

the brain or the main part of the project assisted with the micro-SD card module. This

module enables Arduino uno to gain the ability to speak through looping interface.

The micro-SD card module will be mounted to the Arduino uno which presents

the connection of wirings. The corresponding pins of the micro-SD card module will be

used male-female jumper wires with the female connector, it connects through the pin of

micro-SD card module and the male connector will be directly connect to the arduino

uno. Furthermore, the speaker will be connected to the arduino uno which serve as the

mouth of the patrol robot. Moreover, the power source will be connected to the power

source plug of the arduino uno. The power source was the 9V battery mounted to the 9V

battery clip with plug.

Chapter 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology in the study wherein it discusses the

research design, methods in collecting the data, materials and equipment that will be used

in the study and the procedures for the production of the product.

Research Design

It utilized the descriptive research design in order to determine the effectiveness

of the prototype disinfecting patrol robot. This study regarding with the effectiveness of

prototype disinfecting patrol robot is a combination of qualitative and quantitative

research.

Methods of Collecting Data

This research study concerning with the effectiveness of prototype disinfecting

patrol robot used an evaluation sheet in order to determine its effectiveness.

Procedures

In forming the prototype disinfecting patrol robot, this study includes the

following processes.

1. Gather all the materials need.

2. Program the codes using the Arduino IDE Application.

3. Solder the Female Stackable connector to the PCB Universal board.

4. Mount the 2 Arduino Uno, L293D Motor driver, and HC-05 Module to the

correspondent female stackable connector.

5. Remove HC-05 Module before uploading the program to the Arduino Uno R3

with their corresponding programs.

6. Adjust the codes if necessary.

7. Glue gun the battery holder and nail PCB Universal Board to the main board

and attach the water pump to the container.

8. Connect the wires with the corresponding parts and module to the L293D

Motor Driver with the HC-05 Bluetooth Module.

9. Connect the wires with the corresponding parts and SD card module to the

Arduino Uno R3 with the speaker.

10. Connect the 18650 battery holders with on/off switch to the L293D Motor

Driver and water pump as the power supply.

11. Connect the 9V battery clip with plug to the on/off switch and plug it into the

Arduino Uno R3 as the power supply.

12. Mount the batteries to their corresponding battery holder.

13. Mount the tube to the water pump and attach the Mist nozzle and tube under

the base board.

14. Build the body with its weight is proportional to the torque of the wheels.

15. Turn on all the power supply to make the disinfecting patrol robot working.

Chapter 3

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter specifies the presentation and analysis of data followed by an

interpretation of the evaluated data. The data were to analyze, describe and determine the

effectiveness of prototype disinfecting patrol robot. It includes the following: (1)

description of prototype disinfecting patrol robot in terms of science connectivity,

advantages to frontliners and teachers, objectiveness, materials used, market value,

mobility, its application and appearance; (2) efficiency of the prototype disinfecting

patrol robot; (3) effectiveness of prototype disinfecting patrol robot as evaluated by an

expert.

Science Connectivity

Science Connectivity is a group that are increasing the knowledge of science. The

disinfecting patrol robot had been verbally descripted as excellent in tackling robotics,

involvement of electronics and undergoing efficient observation with a total mean of

5.00, 4.93, and 4.60. Furthermore, with a mean of 4.87 the disinfecting patrol robot had

been excellent in verbal description for promoting technology. Consequently, the overall

mean of the table is 4.85 with a verbal description of excellent which means that the

science connectivity of the disinfecting patrol robot are highly technology influences.

According to the evaluators, the production achieved and presented the idea

outstandingly, by undergoing systematic observation and it clearly demonstrates its

connection with robotics, technology, and electronics.

Innovation

Innovation is a part of idea in which it has been transformed into useful realism.

The disinfecting patrol robot was created differently from other robots found in the

market for it is designed for assisting frontliners and teachers to disinfect schoolgrounds

and can also be programmed easily unlike robots in the market which has fixed features.

The disinfecting patrol robot was verbally described as excellent to the following:

(2) for its usefulness, and (4) for the advancement in technology. With a mean of 4.80

and 4.53, respectively. For the development and promoting a new initiating technology it

gathered a mean of 4.73 and 4.67 with an excellent verbal description. In total, the

disinfecting patrol robot was described excellent that corresponds to its mean of 4.68 in

terms of innovation.

Advantages to the frontliners and teachers

Table 1.3 shows the advantages of the disinfecting patrol robot to the frontliners

and teachers in a health manner. Disinfecting every pathway inside the campus is a great

help to them and with the disinfecting patrol robot assisting them to disinfect viruses.

With a mean of 4.80 and verbal description of excellent, the project shows great benefits

to them. It also encourages frontliners and teachers to introduce robotics to students

where it gained a mean of 4.73 and was verbally described as excellent. Having the

disinfecting patrol robot is and effective way to engage frontliners to empower robotics

and it acquired a mean of 4.73 and a verbal description of excellent. Lastly, with a mean

of 4.73 and a verbal description of excellent goes for the statement that states that the

project developed frontliners’ and teacher’s technical skill. Overall, the automated robot

was verbally described as excellent with a mean of 4.75 in terms of its advantages to

frontliners and teachers.

Project Objectives

Project objectives are process and plans to commit the goal by the end of the

project, where in the output and the aim of the investigation were achieved and are

excellent, with a mean of 4.73 and 4.67. Moreover, the aim of the disinfecting patrol

robot was well explained, and the project introduces improvement to existing technology

with a mean of 4.67 which are verbally described as excellent. Thus, the overall

objectives of the project with a total mean of 4.69 is excellent in verbal description for

undertaking processes.

Materials and Equipment

A mean of 4.13 and 4.40 a verbal description of very good corresponds to the

materials possess its availability and materials are easy to manage. The project utilized

programmed materials gathered a total mean of 4.40 and a verbal description of very

good. The materials being affordable has the mean of 4.20 that corresponds to the verbal

description very good. All in all, the overall mean of the project when it comes to

materials and equipment is 4.28 which falls with the verbal description very good.

Furthermore, all the materials were successfully used according to its purpose.

Market Value

Market value is determined through different factors such as the cost of the

product, how much does the customer will pay, how much competitors charge, labor, and

other. In this investigation the following statements were included to describe the market

value.

The product was priced by the researchers based on the cost of the product and

labor at approximately 2,000 to 2,500 the statement “the product is affordable” has a

mean of 4.27 which has a verbal description of very good. Furthermore, the statement

that states that the product is high quality has a mean of 4.33 and a verbal description of

very good. Moreover, the statement which states that the product’s price is adequate to its

features has a mean of 4.60 which is equal to a verbal description of excellent. Lastly, the

statement that states that the products’ price is reasonable has a mean of 4.67 and has a

verbal description of excellent. The overall mean of this table is 4.47 which equates to a

verbal description of very good. This implies that the market value of the disinfecting

patrol robot is quite affordable, has a high quality, the price is adequate to its features and

the products’ price is reasonable.

Mobility

Mobility is defining as the ability to move freely or a word used to describe

movement in general. The disinfecting patrol robot was installed with 2 motors with 800

grams of torque for each wheel to cover the distance needed for the robot to travel from

one place to another.

The following statements were included to evaluate the mobility of the robot. The

statement that states the project shows patrolling ability has a mean of 4.53 which has a

verbal description of excellent. Moreover, the statement “the project is stable” has a mean

of 4.33 which has a verbal description of very good. Furthermore, the statement that

states the project shows effectiveness has a mean of 4.53 which equals to a verbal

description of excellent. Lastly, the project is fascinating has a mean of 4.53 which

equates to a verbal description of very excellent.

The overall mean of the description of disinfecting patrol robot in terms of

mobility is 4.48 which has a verbal description of very good. This implies that the

mobility of the of the robot was in a very good condition in terms of how easy it shows

patrolling ability, the stability, its effectiveness and fascinating.

Application

It includes the project being operative, shows improvement, seeks endless

curiosity, and has the ability to assist frontliners and teachers. The application of the

robot has an overall mean of 4.85 and a verbal description of excellent wherein the

project gained a mean of 5.00 and a verbal description of excellent for the curiosity it

seeks. Meanwhile, a verbal description of excellent and a mean of 4.93, 4.53 and 4.93

which corresponds to the project being operative, shows improvement, and has the ability

to assist frontliners and teachers.

Based on the evaluators, the project was effectively working and foresee that this

prototype disinfecting patrol robot will possibly help in assisting not only the frontliners

and teachers but also hospitals.

Appearance

Table 1.9 presents the description of the disinfecting patrol robot in terms of its

appearance. The project’s body is made of acrylic sheet and shaped it into its body form

and painted with black. The project competing to other commercialized products shows a

mean of 3.93 and a verbal description of very good, same with the project being

appealing that gained a mean of 4.47 with a verbal description of very good.

Furthermore, the project being presentable has an average mean of 4.00 and the project

being essential has an average mean of 4.60 that both corresponds to the verbal

description excellent. As an overall mean of the description of the disinfecting patrol

robot in terms of its appearance, the project gained a mean of 4.25 that has a verbal

description of very good. The evaluators seek more improvements for its physical

appearance.

Chapter 4

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary and conclusions of the gathered data from the

outcome of the study hoping to improve the disinfecting patrol robot. It also includes the

recommendations needed to develop by the evaluators in using prototype disinfecting

patrol robot.

Summary of Findings

This project was designed to determine the effectiveness of the prototype

disinfecting patrol wherein it is aimed to describe the disinfecting patrol robot in terms of

science connectivity, innovation, project objectives, market value, application,

appearance, materials and equipment, advantages to the students and faculty, and lastly,

its mobility. Also, to determine the efficiency of the robot in terms of its disinfecting

ability.

The researcher found out that the prototype disinfecting patrol robot is effective in

assisting the frontliners and teachers and its disinfecting ability which showcases an

exceptional work. The project was described excellently when it comes to science

connectivity, innovation, advantages to the frontliners and teachers, project objectives,

and application whereas the project was labelled as very good in terms of market value,

appearance, materials and equipment, and lastly mobility.

Conclusions

Based from the results of the study, the following conclusions are drawn:

1. The prototype disinfecting patrol robot is outstanding in terms science

connectivity, innovation, Advantages to the frontliners and teachers, project objectives,

and application since the overall mean are 4.85, 4.68. 4.75, 4.69, and 4.85 is excellent. In

addition, the market value, appearance, materials and equipment, and lastly mobility with

a mean of 4.47, 4.48, 4.28, and 4.48 respectively, it is described as very good.

2. The prototype disinfecting patrol robot is effective since the efficiency of the

robot in disinfecting schoolgrounds is excellent which is equal to the overall mean of

4.67.

Recommendations

On the basis conclusions represented, the following recommendations are

proposed:

1. When making a disinfecting patrol robot the water pump should gain more

pressure to spray more widely through the pathways, not to damp the area or pathways in

a single way with disinfectant. Moreover, the mobile bluetooth controller should replace

with a 2.4 or 5 GHz controller to cover a wider range area.

2. Although it is only a prototype it must show a 3D model for the next generation

of this product, the product will have a bigger and better version in the future, and it must

be easier to manage.

3. The product had been verbally described as very good because it must possess

availability, easy to manage, affordable, utilized programmed materials, has a high

quality, and the product is stable. Furthermore, it can compete to other commercialized

products in terms of its price, properties and accessibility, the product must be appealing,

and presentable.

4. For the students, who is taking the strand of Science, Technology, Engineering

and Mathematics (STEM), they should be critical thinkers and increase Science

knowledge which enables the next generation of innovators. Since, innovation leads to

new products and processes that sustain the economy. Furthermore, the students should

know first the specifications of the product before buying and lastly, improve time

management. This innovation and Science literacy depend on a solid knowledge base in

the STEM areas.
