Reflection #14: Pilar 2: Support and Learning Environment: Access, Equity and

Deliver Modalities

Because of this topic, I learned the value of inclusivity in schools. The main theme of

the report is how an educational institution makes way for an inclusive classroom. It is

making sure that all students are to be valued in the classroom for their diverse abilities,

experiences, and perspectives. This is accomplished through methods, strategies, and

materials that are not only diverse (related to race ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation,

culture, religion, mental and physical ability, and socioeconomic status), but also very

accessible (limiting barriers to access to all students).

In an equitable and inclusive classroom, each student has equal access to learning,

is treated equitably by the learning community, and feels valued and supported by their

instructor and peers. These learning environments aim to emphasize the importance of

cultural awareness, value all social identities, and consider the impact of systemic
inequities. Identifying these important factors will help shape the classroom experiences

and impact student learning.

Because of the pandemic, college instructors like me learned the importance of

online learning, where instruction is delivered primarily over the internet, which is leading

the transformation of education in the Philippines. All of these online learning programs,

strategies, and classes can be categorized under the umbrella of distance education. When

it comes to the rights of the students, experience with civil rights issues increases

awareness of the access and instructional issues that occur when schools take actions

without considering the impact on students of a particular race, ethnicity, gender, or

disability. Sometimes the actions are intentional (like bullying); many times, the results are

unintended. However, overaction can result in separate legal action in the form of a legal

suit from the aggrieved parties that’s why guidance and counseling program is important.

Many teacher preparations and educational leadership programs and efforts lag behind

when it comes to issues of equity. Unfortunately, because there are so many topics and

requirements that teacher preparation programs must meet, there has been little incentive

or interest in adding information on current civil rights legislation, especially for the teachers

themselves, and that is unlikely to change until there is more pressure through accreditation

standards. Therefore, teachers and administrators may not already be aware of or

understand the issues addressed in this publication.

As a student in Educational Management, it is important that in my own watch or

every class that I will facilitate, it must be an environment where access and equity can be

achieved.
