I. Objective
At the end of the 60-minutes lesson, the grade 9 students will be able to;
Define impulse and momentum
Analyze factors that affect impulse and momentum
II. Subject Matter
“Impulse and Momentum”
A. Concepts
Momentum is the product of the mass and velocity of an object,
quantified in kilogram-meters per second. It is dimensionally equivalent to
impulse, the product of force and time, quantified in newton-seconds. Impulse is
the integral of force over the time interval for which it acts. Since force is a
vector quantity, force is also a vector in the same direction. Impulse applied to
an object produces an equivalent vector change in its linear momentum, also in
the same direction. A resultant force causes acceleration and a change in velocity
of the body for as long as it acts. A resultant force applied over a longer time
therefore produces a bigger change in linear momentum than the same force
applied briefly. The change in momentum is equal to the product of the average
force and duration.

A. Review
Before we will start Force is the energy applied to move a
discussing our lesson, let’s have a certain object.
quick review first. Below are terms Time is a quantity measured or expressed in
or quantities you’ve learned which is seconds, minutes or hours.
also related to our lesson.
Mass is the amount of matter present in an
FORCE MASS object.
TIME VELOCITY Velocity is the distance travel over time in a
specific direction
Since we just reviewed those
quantities that would be related to
our next lesson, we will have a short
activity.
B. Motivation
I need 3 demonstrators.
Person A will be walking starting
here to the corner of this room.
Person B will do the same while
running and person C will run, and
while running another person will
try to stop him. Let’s observe and
compare the 3 situations.
As we observed, person A
and B covered the same distance
but what do you think the factor
Speed/Velocity
that affect or made person B to
reach the other corner faster?
What do you think person B Force
applied to increase his velocity?
This time let’s examine the
third scenario performed by person
C. let’s consider that person C is
traveling at a constant velocity.
No
When person C was pushed did he
stopped instantly?
Correct. His velocity decreased
But what did you observed
his velocity?
Very good.
Okay class we’ve unlocked
some terms and concepts already
which is related to our lesson.
The activity we had is
actually the presentation of our
topic which is impulse and
momentum.
C. Presentation
Alright class to further
understand the concept of impulse and
momentum we will have another activity.
D. Activity
Pre-activity
Group yourselves in to two
Activity Proper
The instruction for
the activity is in the
activity sheet. Please
read the instructions
carefully. I'll give you
10 minutes to do the
activity.
Post Activity
Class, present your
activity on the board.
E. Analysis As velocity increases, the
momentum also increases.
Based on the activity, what
have you noticed from the three set- As the mass increases, the
ups? momentum also increases.
I. Assignment
Give 2 situations where there
is an application of impulse and
momentum. Determine where or
when impulse and momentum took
place.
