Worksheet 5
1.) What is the relationship between frequency and pitch?
- In the study of sound, pitch and frequency are related ideas. Hertz units
of frequency are used to measure how frequently a sound wave repeats in a
second. The subjective sense of a sound's pitch, on the other hand, is what
determines how high or low it is. The pitch of sound waves is typically perceived
as being higher for higher frequency waves and lower for lower frequency
waves.
2.) Why will sound not travel in a vacuum?
- Being vibrations of the particles in the medium, sound waves need that
medium to pass through. Sound cannot travel in a vacuum because there are no
vibrating particles. Thus, sound cannot travel over space.
3.) Does sound travel faster in warm air than in cold air? Defend your answer.
- The temperature of the medium through which sound travels has a direct
relationship with its speed. Warm air carries sound more quickly than cold air
because heating air allows its molecules to move more quickly and spread out,
which reduces air density and air resistance to sound wave transmission.
4.) Does sound tend to bend upward or downward when its speed is less near the
ground?
- On a warm day, a positive sound gradient brought on by the decrease in
air density near the ground causes sound waves to bend upward when the speed
of sound is less near the ground. Due to the top layers of the atmosphere's
reflection, this bending effect causes sound to travel farther.
5.) Why will a struck tuning fork sound louder when it is held against a table?
- Sound waves generated by striking a tuning fork pass through the fork
and the surrounding air. The fork's vibrations are transferred to the table when
it is pressed up against a surface, acting as a resonator to amplify and louden
the fork's sound waves.
6.) When you listen to a radio, why do you hear only one station at a time rather
than hearing all stations at once?
- Due to the radio receiver's ability to only take up signals from a certain
frequency or channel, you can only hear one station at a time when listening to
a radio. You can tune the receiver's tuner to a certain radio station's frequency
to block out all other signals and listen exclusively to that station's
programming.
7. Why do you not hear the sound of distant fireworks until after you see them?
- Since light travels at a far faster rate than sound, when distant fireworks
burst, the light initially reaches your eyes before the sound waves do. Therefore,
before you hear the fireworks, you first see them.
