SELF-LEARNING TASK # 3
Case Study: Interpersonal Communication in a Marriage
Name: Suave C. Revillas Degree Program: MAVED
Date: March 29, 2023 Score: ________

Background Information:

Jack and Jill have been married for 10 years. They have two children and both work full-time jobs. Recently, they have
been experiencing communication breakdowns, which have led to arguments and tension in their relationship. They have
decided to seek counseling to improve their communication skills.

Situation:

During the first counseling session, Jack and Jill discuss their communication problems. Jack shares that he feels like Jill
doesn't listen to him and that she always interrupts him when he is talking. He also feels like she is always criticizing him
and making him feel inadequate. Jill responds by saying that she feels like Jack is always defensive and that he never
takes responsibility for his mistakes. She also feels like he doesn't listen to her when she is talking and that he always
tries to fix her problems instead of just listening.

Analysis:

In this situation, both Jack and Jill are experiencing communication breakdowns. They are not listening to each other,
and they are not communicating effectively. They are both defensive, which is causing tension and conflict in their
relationship.

Questions:

1. What are some of the underlying issues that Jack and Jill might be facing in their relationship?
I believe that the couples are facing communication problems in their relationship because both of them are
making assumptions of what the other thinks or feels, and also not grasping the whole message before reacting or also
becoming a passive listener, which I believe is the main reason for their conflict.
2. What are some of the communication barriers that Jack and Jill are experiencing?
I think the communication barriers they have is selective perception by which individuals perceive what they want to in
media messages while ignoring opposing viewpoints. because both of them perceive that the other person is not listening
well to him/ her as he talks and they also perceive thinking about the other before they have finished conveying their
message.
3. How might Jack and Jill's communication problems be affecting their children?
I believe it would affect their children but not that much greatly because they are family and having conflict between
family members would be troublesome especially for the children of choosing which to side in an argument because the
whether they like it or not they are bounded by blood despite having full time job by themselves.
4. What communication strategies can Jack and Jill use to improve their relationship?
The communication strategies that Jack and Jill can use to improve their relationship is lerning to be an active listener
and Understand the Full Spectrum of Communication Skills, pay attention to both of their language used, tone of voice
and also their body languages.
5. How can Jack and Jill learn to be more empathetic and understanding towards each other?
Jack and Jill can learn to be more empathetic and understanding towards each other by learning on being and active

they will listdown some of their causes of miscommunication and for the to agree on terms where one must humble and
adjust to the other.
7. What role can the counselor play in helping Jack and Jill improve their communication skills?
In this situation I believe the counselor role is to be the mediator of the couple for them to bring out all their problems
and agree on the solution for that problem.
8. What are some ways that Jack and Jill can practice their communication skills outside of counseling sessions?
I believe the ways in which Jack and Jill can practice their communication skills outside of counseling is by practicing to
tone down their voices because one of the seldom reasons why conflict can ignite is because of uncontrollable tone in the
voice. Also they could also do the things they did 10 years ago, remember the reason and ways how the fell in love with
each other, go on dates together get back how they where before.
9. How can Jack and Jill learn to manage their emotions during communication breakdowns?
I believe to manage emotion is very hard especially in a heated argument, but I believe they can address this by making a
pause before reacting to a situation, Stabilizing your emotion before reacting.
10. How might Jack and Jill's improved communication skills benefit their overall relationship and quality of life?
They will have a harmonious living and have a peaceful life. Since have already evaluated and agreed to meet
halfway.
