The Great Wall is one of the most important landmarks in China. It is also
called “The Great Sleeping Dragon”. The Wall is over 8500 km long, and
goes from the east to the west of the country. The wall was completed in
1644, but it took more than 2,000 years to build. Emperor Qin Shi Huang is
widely recognized as the first man who ordered to build the Great Wall of
China, in order to protect the his empire from attacks. So, they put seven
thousand watch towers along the wall.
This universal landmark is made of stones, wood and bricks. Many parts of
the wall were destroyed through history but were rebuilt again by the
different emperors who ruled China. In 1987, the Great Wall of China was
listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
