CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the course of history. The virus's nature,
particularly how it spreads, has changed human behaviour, relationships, and lifestyles,
as well as the economic, political, and cultural landscapes of societies all over the
world. It has also exacerbated poverty, discrimination, and inequalities in many parts of
the world, not only because COVID-19 appears to be affecting poorer communities
more than richer communities, but also as a result of the measures taken by states to
control the virus's spread, primarily by restricting freedom of movement through the
imposition of community quarantine, lockdowns, and curfews in parts of the world
(Simbulan, 2020).

Higher education institutions (HEIs), both public and private, have also had to adjust to the new
situation where face-to-face interaction and mass gatherings are prohibited. According to
(Deped, 2021)

Distance education is a process of planned teaching learning that occurs in

a different place from the normal learning setting and requires communication and

a special corporate organization via technologies.

Distance education a concept, which pertains to increasing the quality of

education to develop student's learning. According to Participants Educational

Research. (PER,2020).

Distance education in which the antecedent practices were based on mail

correspondence technologies, with advances in technology. The rise of internet has

brought out the concept of electronic learning by changing.

Academic problems had long been an issue which affects the learners mental,
psychological, and physical aspects. These problems may cause mental health issues, such as
stress, anxiety and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). During the outbreak of
the
COVID - 19 pandemic, many students were affected by the sudden transition in learning which
affected them. These problems include lack of academic support, lack of adequate resources to
support online teaching, lack of socialization, stress, anxiety which leads to suicide, lack of
teacher
support, and lack of motivation in attending classes. (Et al, 2021)

As the school year progress from its opening, more and more challenges were
encountered in to day-to-day delivery of basic education services. Distance education is defined
as “any educational process in which all or most of the teaching is conducted by someone
removed in space and/or time from the learner, with the effect that all or most of the
communication between teachers and learners is through an artificial medium, either electronic
or print” (UNESCO, 2002).

In addition, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of learners faced a lot of barriers
when it comes to learning because they are not used in learning at home and still adjusting to
what
we call the new normal. On the other hand, the COVID-19 is a disease brought about a novel
coronavirus called severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus or more known as 2019-nCov
(Emedicine, 2020).

It was first distinguished in the midst of an outbreak discovered in Wuhan City, Hubei
Province, China. It was then declared on March 11, 2020 that COVID 19 is a global pandemic;
the
second global pandemic followed by the H1N1 influenza, a pandemic that also happened way
back
2009. In 2020, the number of students affected by the global pandemic all around the world is
estimated to reach 1.6 billion (UNESCO, 2020).

Furthermore, with new normal in education DepEd designed the Basic Education-
Learning Continuity Plan which aims to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff. It also
intends to give quality distance learning by using self-learning modules. These can be accessed
through digital forms, radio, TV, and online platforms (DepEd, 2020).

The COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes which altered the normal course of
life. The pandemic caused many changes in learning styles and modes of learning for learning
institutions to cope up with this changing world. These changes brought about many this
situations that caught us off guard like unpreparedness to deal such situations and availability of
educational materials to be able to address the issue. (Et al,2022)
