She began to cry again. Mrs. Wilson was very sad because she knew her sister loved the cat
very much. Suddenly Mrs. Wilson said "I can bury your cat in my garden in Duncan and you can
come and visit him sometimes." Mrs. Smith stopped crying and the two sisters had tea together
and a nice visit.
It was now five o'clock and Mrs. Wilson said it was time for her to go home. She put on her hat,
coat and gloves and Mrs. Smith put the dead Sammy into a shopping bag. Mrs. Wilson took the
shopping bag and walked to the bus stop. She waited a long time for the bus so she bought a
newspaper. When the bus arrived, she got on the bus, sat down and put the shopping bag on
the floor beside her feet. She then began to read the newspaper. When the bus arrived at her

READ CAREFULLY THIS SHORT STORY ABOUT A TEACHER NAMED MR
JOHNSON. THEN, READ THE QUESTIONS AND CHOOSE ONE OF THE ANSWERS
FROM THE LIST.
Poor Mr Johnson!
Last week, there was one terrible day. It was Friday. Usually, there are about 25 students in my
class, but that day, there were only 2 people! The weather didn't help, in fact, it was really cold.
It was raining a lot. It was dark and gray outside. There wasn't any sunshine. I think the students
weren't at school because they were sick or just got lazy.
Mr Johnson is our teacher. He is always at school. He is never at home on a Friday. Last Friday
was no different. He wasn't in bed. He was in the classroom working, and he was cold! Why was
he so cold? That's a very good question. He was cold because the heater in the school was
broken. It was freezing. The school was like a huge refrigerator. Our room was like a freezer!
And poor Mr. Johnson was like ice! The small class was cold, very cold indeed!
The following days were much warmer. The heater was fixed on Tuesday, so everything was ok.
There were 25 students, not only two like that day. But where was Mr Johnson? He wasn't there.
He was at home, sick in bed!

THE SEASONS IN ECUADOR
Ecuador has basically two seasons. From December to July it is hot, sunny, humid and
sometimes rainy. August will start being a little cool at night, but still
sunny in the mornings and
afternoons.
For this reason, January, February, and March local people will start going to the
beach,
especially on weekends. Lately, people from countries like Colombia, Peru, Argentina as well as
people from other Ecuadorian regions like the highlands will also visit Ecuadorian beaches
especially Salinas, Playas, Manta, and some other beaches in Esmeraldas, in the north of the
country. European and North American tourists love going to these places too.

A man named Randy liked to hunt trees. He looked for big trees and old trees. He made
maps to show where these trees were. He did not want to cut them down. He wanted
people to take care of them.
Randy was told of a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall.
That would make it the tallest tree in Canada. Randy set out to find the tree.
But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger. Loggers wanted to cut down
Canada’s tallest tree and all the trees around it.
Randy made a path in the forest so people could see the tall tree. The tree was so big and
beautiful it would fill them with awe. More and more people wanted to save that forest.
Thanks to these people, that forest is now a park. Canada’s tallest tree is still there.
There may still be a bigger tree out there. Maybe you will find it. But there are only a few
old forests left in Canada. Many are still at risk of being cut down.
The correct answer is: He made maps to show where Canada's biggest tree were.
b) What did the loggers want to do to Canada's tallest tree?

Pets
Many people like to keep pets. Some just have one pet while other people keep many different
pets. This often depends on if they live in a big or small house. If a person lives in a small
house, or in a flat or apartment, they cannot keep a lot of pets because there is not enough
room. If people live in a big house that has a garden then it's a different story. They keep more
pets and bigger ones.
For a person who lives in a small house, a small pet is often good. They could keep a bird or
two because these are very interesting pets. They have brightly colored feathers and make nice
chirping sounds. If you have a parrot it can even learn to talk, but it takes a long time to teach it
to say some words. If a bird is too noisy then they could keep some cute animals like mice,
turtles, or hamsters. These are all nice and fluffy so you can take them out of their cages and
play with them. Fish are also a type of pet for people without much space or time. They just
need some food and their bowl or tank cleaning sometimes.
People that have more space and time to look after a pet could keep something bigger that
needs more care, such as a dog or cat. Cats do not need to be looked after as much as a dog,
but they get lonely if there is no one there with them. They often like to have someone to sit with
and who strokes them. This makes them happy and they start to purr. If someone has a dog
they need to take it out for walks so that it can get exercise. It is good to take a dog out twice a
day. Dogs need exercise so they cannot be kept in the house all the time.
The correct answer is: B) They are brightly colored and make nice sounds.
A) Mice
B) Fish
C) Horse
D) Cat
5) Which of the following is an animal that cannot normally come into a house?
A) Cat
B) Dog
C) Bird
D) Elephant

One day, a poor man, who had only one piece of bread to eat, was walking past a restaurant. There
was a large pot of soup on the table. The poor man held his bread over the soup, so the steam from
the soup went into the bread and gave it a good smell. Then he ate the bread.
The restaurant owner was very angry at this, and he asked the man for money, in exchange for the
steam from the soup. The poor man had no money, so the restaurant owner took him to Nasreddin,
who was a judge at the time. Nasreddin thought about the case for a little while. Then he took some
money from his pocket. He held the coins next to the restaurant owner's ear and shook them so that
they made a jingling noise.
'What do you mean? That was just the sound of coins!' Protested the restaurant owner.
'The sound of the coins is payment for the smell of the soup,' answered Nasreddin.
3. Why did he hold the bread over the soup? So the steam from the soup would go into the bread.
