Dear Mary,

Thank you for your last letter which I received last Saturday . I am so glad that you
decided to start learning French like me. If you want, we can go on holiday together next
summer to France and then we can practice our French together . When I come to visit you in
Guayaquil in winter, we can talk together in French if you want.

Yesterday, I returned from my short holiday camping in Los Angeles. I went with Ana, my friend
that you met the last time you were here . Do you remember her? We stayed in her
tent in a campsite near Palo Alto but the weather was terrible for
all the days we were there. It rained every day and everything was so

wet and we were so cold . But while I was there I saw a lot of interesting

places and we visited a lot of castles and other historical places . One day, we hired a
boat and went out onto a lake which was near the campsite. It rained all day
but me and Ana decided to go for a swim in the lake and that was
wonderful.

I am starting my new job next week in the bank near my house. My cousin works there
and he helped me to find a job for every Saturday morning. I work from nine o'clock in the
morning until one o'clock in the afternoon. It is very useful for me
because I want to work in a bank when I finish university. How is your job at the

supermarket? Please tell me what you are doing this month I am going to do
my French homework now!

MY FLIGHT TO LONDON

Last month was my first time to fly by myself. I was a little nervous, but it was exciting! First, I (1) took a taxi to the international

airport terminal. Then, I checked-in at the check-in counter and (2) walked to the departure lounge at Gate 64.

I (3) was early , so I (4) didn't have to wait a long time to go through immigration and security. I waited in the departure

lounge (5) for about 25 minutes and then I showed my passport and boarding pass before I boarded the plane. (6) After I

boarded the plane, I walked along the aisle and found my seat, and then I sat down and fastened (7) my seat belt. I was lucky

because my seat was a window seat, (8) so I could look outside as the plane took off.

After (9) a few hours, the flight attendants served (10) us dinner, and then I talked to the passenger sitting (11)

next to me. His name was Leonardo, and I was surprised to find out that he was also traveling to London to study English for

the summer. Finally, I watched an action movie, and then our plane landed soon after that. It was a great experience, and I (12)
made a lot of friends during my six weeks in England. I’ll e-mail you again after I fly back to Italy next Saturday. See you soon!

The day of a sportsman

Chris is an athlete and he wakes up at 4:00 am every weekday morning. He spends the first 30
minutes reading and then 15 minutes meditating. At 5:00 am Chris checks his email for only 15
minutes and then goes for his first run of the day. He runs for an hour and a half along the lake
near his house. After running, Chris has a shower and then prepares breakfast, which is usually
yogurt and fruit. However, he occasionally has coffee and bacon and fried eggs.

He usually finishes breakfast at around 7 am. If it is a weekday, he always leaves the house at 8
am and goes to training. His training starts at 8:30 am, and he needs 30 minutes to drive to the
gym. He trains for 3 hours with his team and then goes home for lunch. He always eats a very
big and healthy lunch. As soon as he finishes lunch, he has a nap for one hour.

After his nap, he likes to go for a walk around the lake and look at nature. He sometimes reads
or meditates at the lake in the afternoon. In the evening, during the week, he meets up with
friends. Most of his friends are athletes too, so they have a lot to talk about.

He typically goes to bed at 9 pm because he prefers to be awake in the morning than at night.
He sometimes falls asleep listening to music, but he never watches the television or reads
anything on his tablet. He always makes sure his alarm is set and is almost always asleep by
9:45 pm.

TWO SISTERS AND A CAT

Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Smith are sisters. Mrs. Wilson lives in a house in Duncan and Mrs. Smith
lives in a condominium in Victoria. One day Mrs. Wilson visited her sister. When her sister
answered the door, Mrs. Wilson saw tears in her eyes. "What's the matter?" she asked. Mrs.
Smith said "My cat Sammy died last night and I have no place to bury him".

She began to cry again. Mrs. Wilson was very sad because she knew her sister loved the cat
very much. Suddenly Mrs. Wilson said "I can bury your cat in my garden in Duncan and you can
come and visit him sometimes." Mrs. Smith stopped crying and the two sisters had tea together
and a nice visit.

It was now five o'clock and Mrs. Wilson said it was time for her to go home. She put on her hat,
coat and gloves and Mrs. Smith put the dead Sammy into a shopping bag. Mrs. Wilson took the
shopping bag and walked to the bus stop. She waited a long time for the bus so she bought a
newspaper. When the bus arrived, she got on the bus, sat down and put the shopping bag on
the floor beside her feet. She then began to read the newspaper. When the bus arrived at her

READ CAREFULLY THIS SHORT STORY ABOUT A TEACHER NAMED MR
JOHNSON. THEN, READ THE QUESTIONS AND CHOOSE ONE OF THE ANSWERS
FROM THE LIST.

Poor Mr Johnson!
Last week, there was one terrible day. It was Friday. Usually, there are about 25 students in my
class, but that day, there were only 2 people! The weather didn't help, in fact, it was really cold.
It was raining a lot. It was dark and gray outside. There wasn't any sunshine. I think the students
weren't at school because they were sick or just got lazy.

Mr Johnson is our teacher. He is always at school. He is never at home on a Friday. Last Friday
was no different. He wasn't in bed. He was in the classroom working, and he was cold! Why was
he so cold? That's a very good question. He was cold because the heater in the school was
broken. It was freezing. The school was like a huge refrigerator. Our room was like a freezer!
And poor Mr. Johnson was like ice! The small class was cold, very cold indeed!

The following days were much warmer. The heater was fixed on Tuesday, so everything was ok.
There were 25 students, not only two like that day. But where was Mr Johnson? He wasn't there.
He was at home, sick in bed!

It was fixed on Tuesday.

When was the heater fixed?

Question 1 Correct Mark 5.00 out of 5.00

READING

Pets
Many people like to keep pets. Some just have one pet while other people keep many different
pets. This often depends on if they live in a big or small house. If a person lives in a small
house, or in a flat or apartment, they cannot keep a lot of pets because there is not enough
room. If people live in a big house that has a garden then it's a different story. They keep more
pets and bigger ones.

For a person who lives in a small house, a small pet is often good. They could keep a bird or
two because these are very interesting pets. They have brightly colored feathers and make nice
chirping sounds. If you have a parrot it can even learn to talk, but it takes a long time to teach it
to say some words. If a bird is too noisy then they could keep some cute animals like mice,
turtles, or hamsters. These are all nice and fluffy so you can take them out of their cages and
play with them. Fish are also a type of pet for people without much space or time. They just
need some food and their bowl or tank cleaning sometimes.

People that have more space and time to look after a pet could keep something bigger that
needs more care, such as a dog or cat. Cats do not need to be looked after as much as a dog,
but they get lonely if there is no one there with them. They often like to have someone to sit with
and who strokes them. This makes them happy and they start to purr. If someone has a dog
they need to take it out for walks so that it can get exercise. It is good to take a dog out twice a
day. Dogs need exercise so they cannot be kept in the house all the time.

Reading comprehension questions that go with the above reading passage.

1) Why can a person in a small house not have a lot of pets? 

A) They can have a lot of pets.

B) They cannot grow enough food for them.

C) They do not have enough space.

D) Other people might not like too many pets.

Mark 1.00 out of 1.00

The correct answer is: C) They do not have enough space.
