INFORMATION LITERACY
According to the United States National Forum (NFIL) on
Information Literacy defines IL as

❖ “the ability to …

1. Know when there is a need for information,

2. To be able to identify, locate, evaluate,

3. Effectively use that information for the issue or

problem at hand.”

WHAT IS INFORMATION LITERACY?
A number of efforts have been made to better define the concept and
its relationship to other skills and forms of literacy.

THE IMPORTANCE OF IL
IL itself is emerging as a distinct skill set and a necessary key to
one’s social and economic well-being in an increasingly complex
information society.

● According to McTavish (2009), in order to increase and maximize

people’s contributions to a healthy, democratic, and pluralistic
เจ ญ งเ อง ง ง
society, and maintain a prosperous and sustainable economy,
governments and industries around the world are challenging
education systems to focus people’s attention on literacy.

THE IMPORTANCE OF IL
• In Canada, because of a great focus on a supposed literacy

crisis, it has caused some alarm in some educational sectors.

❖ Brink (2006) researched government organization, such

as Human Resources and Skill Development Canada, claims that
almost half of working-age Canadians do not have the literacy
skills they need to meet the ever-increasing demands of modern
life.
CONCLUSION
• IL forms the basis for lifelong learning.

• It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments,

and to all levels of education.

• It enables learners to master content and extend their

investigations.

independent
• Learners become more self-directed.

• Learners assume greater control over their own learning.

STANDARDS OF IL
ค .
สามารถ
• In January of 2000, the IL Competency Standards for Higher Education were approved

and in February of 2004, the American Association for Higher Education and the
Council of Independent Colleges endorsed them.

The Standards dictate that an information literate person:

Use
• Uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose. the information
effectively

• Understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues

surrounding the use of information, and accesses and uses Understand

information ethically and legally.
IN SHORT, IL MEANS…
• IL can no longer be defined without considering

technology literacy in order for individuals to function

in an information-rich, technology infused world.

• The National Higher Education Information and

Communication Technology (ICT) Initiative has

developed a definition of literacy for the 21st century
which combines cognitive and technical skills with an
ethical/legal understanding of information.

ICT PROFICIENCY

technology
• ICT proficiency is the ability to use digital technology,

communication tools, and/or networks to define an

information need, access, manage, integrate, and
evaluate information, create new information or
knowledge and be able to communicate this
information to others.
TO TAKE THIS COURSE ….
• Learners will neither become information literate nor
communication technology literate overnight.

• Just as with speaking skills and writing skills, your abilities

will improve over time as you gain expertise in the topics
you choose to investigate.

• This process will give you practice in searching for,

selecting and evaluating the information you encounter and
will allow you to create new ideas, which you communicate
to others using a variety of technological tools.
IL SKILLS
• The skills that are required to be information
literate call for an understanding of:

• A need for information

• The resources available
• How to find information
• The need to evaluate results
• How to work with or exploit results
• Ethics and responsibility of use
• How to communicate or share your findings
• How to manage your findings
WHY IS IL NEEDED FOR WORKERS?
• Workers must be able to gather, synthesize, interpret, and evaluate.

• The ability to ..

• articulate a problem to be investigated, ระ ญหา จะ ตรวจสอบ

รวบรวม
• locate and assemble information,

• scrutinize gathered resources,

• process and apply information towards a solution,

DEFINE
• Define what exactly are you looking for?
-

• Different search terms may turn up very

different results.

• You may want to try different search strings

to find information that will help you.

• Keep your search string specific and you

will likely find usable information.

• A search string is a combination of keywords, truncation symbols, and boolean operators you enter into the search box of a library database or search engine.

INQUIRE สอบถามไ ถาม
• It is best to use a variety of online resources.

• Do not just use commercial websites

• Besure to include research such as that found in

journal, magazine, and/or newspaper articles,
and educational websites as well.

if they don’t, it is still illegal to pass the information

• Youcan be charged with theft and or be charged with a civil

suit for monetary damages for stealing someone else’s words
or ideas without their permission, so it is important to put
information into your own word.

LITERACIES FOR THE
INFORMATION AGE
• A single current newspaper contains more written and visual information than the

average person in the 17th century was likely to come across in their entire lifetime.
