This document discusses information literacy and its importance. It defines information literacy as the ability to recognize when information is needed and locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information. It then outlines six indicators of information literacy according to Old Dominion University: 1) determining how much information is needed, 2) accessing information effectively and efficiently, 3) critically evaluating information and sources, 4) incorporating information into one's knowledge base, 5) using information effectively for a specific purpose, and 6) considering economic, legal and social issues relating to information use. The document emphasizes that information literacy is an important skill that enriches many disciplines.

LITERACY • As mentioned earlier, humans are distinct from other animals because of their ability to think.
• From the simple ABC to the quadratic
equations, it's an innate gift for this race to expand knowledge.
• The expansion of knowledge cannot be
fully achieved without information. INFORMATION • It is derived from the Latin word 'informare' which means “to give form, shape, or character to” something. • It's purpose is to adhere 'sense' to anything we percieve. • It is not a discipline or field in particular. • A key element that enriches basically all disciplines - from Science to Philosophy. IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATION • Information provides richness to reality (Borgmann, 1999).
• It can be of great help by promoting a
'universal language' for people to share and understand. SEMIOTIC THEORY BY RONALD BARTHES • Centers on signs and how people decode and interpret them. • It isn't goes the literal use of language to provide information. • Rather, it focuses on how everything around us, may it be a physical attribute, an object, or fashion sense, is able to provide information through a sign system established by society. INDICATORS OF INFORMATION LITERACY • Information Literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to 'recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information' (Association for College and Research Libraries). • Old Dominion University cited six indicators of being information literate in 2013. INDICATORS OF INFORMATION LITERACY 1. Determine the extent of information needed.
•information overload can best explain this.
•getting too much informtion leads to complicated interpretations. INDICATORS OF INFORMATION LITERACY 2. Access the needed information effectively and efficiently.
•includes sources where information can
come from. •different forms of media contribute to the easy access of information. INDICATORS OF INFORMATION LITERACY 3. Evaluate information and its sources critically • common in dealing with an academic paper. • a researcher must always be knowledgeable on the accuracy and credibility of the materials used. INDICATORS OF INFORMATION LITERACY 4. Incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base. • the principle of Barthe's semiotic theory on one's interpretation is highly crucial in consuming information. • thus, it is important to always consider the capacity of one's understanding to ensure that the information is correctly ingested. INDICATORS OF INFORMATION LITERACY
5. Use the information effectivley to achieve
a specific purpose. •knowing the bounds is important in acquiring information. •it is important to know the right reason on why one is getting the information. INDICATORS OF INFORMATION LITERACY 6. Checking the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use of information ethically and legally. •Searching of information online is easy but everyone should be responsible about it. Questions? Additional Input • The access of information in the Internet can be an advantage but it can also be a disadvantage to young people. • The early tools during the prehistoric era were fashioned for two basic purposes. These are cutting and scrapping. • Flint is the most suitable kind of stone during the prehistoric era. • One of the most important contributions that also paved the way to modern technology was allegedly discovered by the Peking man, 500 000 years ago in China is the fire. • According to studies, 72% of Internet users are actively engaged on social media.
