Social Cultural Diversity in Society

 The diversity of ethnic groups in Indonesia is caused by the shape of the Indonesian
Archipelago, so we must have tolerance attitude to appreciate social differences.
 Main factors of diversity are :
1. Geographical isolation ( give an inhibiting impact to get unity and differences local culture)
2. Climate
3. Geographical location (the reason why we have many cultures)

 Ethnocentrism is the attitude and views that underestimate other societies and cultures.
 Assimilation (face a new culture and leave their old culture)
 Acculturation (The mixing of foreign culture with Indonesian original culture without
eliminating the original cultural element)
Example Acculturation :
1. Cheng – H Mosque Surabaya, the building is acculturated with Chinese cultural
architecture.
2. “Gedung Sate Bandung”, the building is acculturated with Ducth cultural
architecture

 There are seven elements of universal culture :

1. language system
2. knowledge system
3. Social organization system
4. Equipment system life and technology
5. Livelihood system
6. Religious system
7. Art.

Social Culture Problem

A. Social Inequality and poverty
Social inequality in Indonesia arises as a result of differences in individual income levels and
related to poverty.
B. Gender equality
Gender equality in Indonesia has been initiated by figures such as Kartini, Cut Nyak Dien, Dewi,
Sartika, Ratu Kalinyamat, and Keumalahayati
C. Juvenile delinquency
1. Vandalisme
Vandalism is the act of vandalizing and destroying valuables or other art that do not belong to
them. Example this activity is usually done by scribbling on walls with words without
permission.
2. A student Fighter
Fights between students are a social culture problem that has caused many victims and
axiety among local residents.
3. Drugs Abuse
Drugs Abuse is using drugs without a doctor’s prescription because of illness or other things
that are recommended by doctor.
The factors cause people use drugs:
- Perr pressure
- Unstable home environment
- Poor relationship with parents
- Curiosity

Local History
Sultan Nuku
Sultan Nuku is known as a multicultural unifying figure of Papua and Maluku. Sultan Nuku
in every battle always won against the Dutch. Sultan Nuku reigned until 14 November 1805
and died as the Sultan of the Kingdom Tidore .
Ratu Kalinyamat
 Ratu Kalinyamat is the third princess of Sultan Trenggana. Queen Kalinyamat's first name is
Retna Kencana.
The title Kalinyamat was given after she married Raden Toyib (Sultan Hadlirin) and obtained
a place called Kalinyamat which is between Jepara and Kudus.
