the planet. It is really a beautiful mountain.

not know it! What about Galapagos Islands
we have heard that place is a paradise.
When are you going there?
Visitor: I’ m going there in about two
weeks but previously, I am trying to learn
more about it. Here comes a really
interesting fact! Did you know that
Charles Darwin raised his Evolution
Theory there? Animals of Galapagos are
unique and have adapted to the islands’
special conditions so he noticed living
things adapt and evolve!
Now I have to say bye because I am going
to visit the middle of the world town! I will
tell you more about it soon and I promise I
will send pictures as soon as I get there.

similar to what we saw in our last trip to
India. Is it similar?
Visitor: Well, kind of similar but here they
have something really special and unique. I
bought a beautiful pair of earrings called
“candongas”. I’ll send a picture right
away! I am sure you will love them!

Hey guys! This is Mary Ann and I am in
Ecuador right now. This is a beautiful little

country in South America. Its natural
features are wonderful and its culture is so
rich! But today I want to tell you about its
traditional food. Well, I’ve traveled
through most of the Highlands and some
parts of the Amazonia and many places in
the Coast and I still don’t know which kind
of food is my favorite… but I am going to
tell you about some interesting dishes from
each part… well I have tried Chugchucaras
in Latacunga… what a difficult name to
pronounce… I was on my way to Cotopaxi
national park and my friends said it was a
good idea to try a traditional dish of the
zone… I loved it! It’s really delicious. I
also wanted to try “hallullas” but I was too
full…. Like two weeks ago that I was in the
coast I stopped in Guayaquil and my guides
made me tried “cangrejos” at night! They
are special crabs that live in mangroves I
had never tried something like that before I
really liked it… if you ever come to
Ecuador don’t miss it! And in my trip to the
Amzonia I tried Maito. It is fish in some
special leaves with jungle seasonings which
is grilled for about half an hour and you
eat with plantain and yuca. Delicious guys!

will tell you more about this magical

special festivals and celebrations during
Carnival. Listen to the conversation and

celebration for Carnival. I have already
visited lovely and beautiful traditional
festivals the previous years but know I
would like something that shows different
traditions.
Guide: Well, I would recommend you to
visit Chota Valley. There is a wonderful,
kind of new festival called Coangue
Carnival. “Coangue” in some African
language means, Hot Valley. The
celebration helps people keep building
culture and identity. I am sure you’rer are
going to love to learn to dance “ la

bomba” music which represents in some
way their survival and how close they are
to nature. Something really interesting
about the festival is that people celebrate it
next to Chota river.
Visitor: I love it!!!. I think I am going there
next carnival. What can we find there?
Guide: There is a very interesting festival
with music and dance, handicrafts, poems,
folk songs, typical food, and some sports.
People from Chota are very nice with

Well, a friend who is traveling around
South America sent us some information
about a beautiful little country called
Ecuador. Let’s listen!
Visitor: Hey everyone! Today I am telling
you something wonderful. One of the
biggest celebrations in Ecuador es New
year’s eve. The best representations “los
años Viejos” are big scarecrow-like dolls
filled with sawdust and newspaper. They
are a family activity in Quito and many of
them may represent a family member, a
famous person, movie characters, cartoons,
or politician of the country. In Guayaquil,

the “años viejos” are different. They build
huge dolls made of paper and cardboard.
They look like statues and are very
accurate. But, what is the purpose of these
“viejos”? at midnigh people burn them on
the streets which symbolizes forgetting all
the bad luck or bad situations of the year
that is ending and the hope to have a better
coming year.

Sure, we have gotten some prizes in sports.
You are still very young but there are some
very special moments in which the whole
country has been extremely happy because
of sport achievements. We got a gold medal
in Olympic games; we have gotten s couple
of trophies in soccer and our Ecuadorian
team was once in the top 20 list of the best
teams of the world. We even got the first
place in an international tennis
tournament. We have climbed the Everest
and crossed freezing seas by swimming. As
Ecuadorian I feel so proud for all the
moments of success. We may not have done
much so far, but our sports representatives

Korea. He became famous in Latin
America because of some gold medals in
South American and Bolivarian Games as

Hi everyone! I am so glad to be here today!
This has been the sports week in our
program and today we are going to talk
about some sports that are not so
traditionally practiced but still have
brought excitement to our hearts.
First, let’s talk about swimming. This one
of my favorite stories. In 1972 Munich
Olympic Games. Jorge Delgado from
Guayaquil participated in the swimming
final in 200 mts. He got the fourth place.
Now, imagine crossing a part of the cold
sea. Well, in 1997, Galo Yepez from Quito
was the first Ecuadorian to cross swimming
the English Channel, part of the cold
Atlantic Ocean which is located between
England and France. Twenty years later,
in 2018, Sara Palacios from Quito too also
crossed those cold waters which was about
34 kms.

But there’s even more!
Imagine climbing the highest mountain of
the world without oxygen and get to the top
with our beautiful flag! Well, two
Ecuadorians have made it. First, Ivan
Vallejo from Ambato, has climbed the 14
highest mountains in the world including
the Everest and became the seventh person
in the world to do it. Carla Pérez was the
first Latin American woman to get the top
of the Everest.
As I investigate about our sport glories, I
feel really proud of all the things we have
made in spite of being a small country.
I am so sad that we do not have more time
today to talk about all the Ecuadorians that
have made great things in sport but we will
do it soon!

players in our country besides Andres
Gomez such as “Pancho” Segura who

became famous worldwide by 1952 when

he was number 1 in the world and the first
Latin American to be part of the tennis
world rank. Francisco Segura, was born in
Guayaquil in a poor family. He was a
premature baby who suffered health
problems such as malaria and others.
When he was a child, he used to collect
tennis balls in a club where his father was
a butler. He began loving the sport. Due to
his early health problems he couldn’t be
taller than 1,60 mts, in spite of that he was
really fast and started holding the racket
with both hands which was not usual. That
strategy became his strength. He got a
scholarship to study in Miami university
and won three university championships.
After his glory years he became coach of
great tennis players. He was so famous that
he even played with some Hollywood stars
and appeared in TV programs. He used to
play with many famous people in a benefic
tournament that was held in Guayaquil
from the 70’s to 1995. After that he rarely
visited Ecuador. He died in 2017.
