DESIGN OF RECTANGULAR WATER

TANK

 lx = shorter dimension
 Ly = longer dimension
 Lz = height of tank

One-way Wall in Vertical Direction

 if ly/lz or lx/lz > 2.0

 1-way wall in vertical directions
 Top end free Top end hinge Top end fix

 lz lz lz

B.M only in vertical direction, need to

analyze this as one way slab/beam for
unit width

One way wall in Horizontal

Direction
 lx/lz or ly/lz < 0.5

 lz B.M only in horizontal direction, need to

analyze this in horizontal direction as one
way slab/beam for unit width

 lx

Two way walls

This wall will behave as
plate element and B.M will
 Lx/lz or ly/lz = 0.5 to 2.0 be present in both
direction lx and ly

There are three cases for

these walls also;
 lz
1- Two way wall with top
end free
2- 1- Two way wall with top
end Hinge
3-1- Two way wall with top
lx end Fix
B.M in horizontal as wel as in Vertical
direction, Behave like plate element need
to analyze it as slab/plate element and
needed to determine the coefficient as
per end conditions given.

Two way wall with top end free

In This case

M = 𝐶𝑣 𝑤 𝑙𝑧 max. at bottom

M = 𝐶𝐻 𝑤 𝑙𝑥 max. at λ2lz
 MH- MV- MH-
M = 𝐶𝐻 𝑤 𝑙𝑋 max. at λ3lz
MH+ λlz

Mv- Max

Two way wall with top end Hinge

In This case

M = 𝐶𝑣 𝑤 𝑙𝑧 max. at bottom

M = 𝐶𝑣 𝑤 𝑙𝑧 max. at λ1lz
 MH- MV- MH-
M = 𝐶𝐻 𝑤 𝑙𝑥 max. at λ2lz
MH+ λlz

Two way wall with top end fixed 11

 Similar procedure will be followed for walls with top end free, it will
have Mv- top, Mv- bottom, Mv+ , MH- and M+ moments

 Separate chart will be used for this case.

Base Slab of Rectangular water 13

Tank
 Base slab can be either
 1- Suspended ( Not resting on soil)
 2- Continuous resting on soil

13

Suspended base slab 14

Here Base slab is designed for

water load and self weight of
 slab.

Negative moment is maximum

when tank is full and moment is
transferred from the wall to
base slab

Posyive moment is not

maximum when tank is full as;

Mo = M+ + M-
M+ = Mo – M-

14

Critical depth for positive Moment 15

in Base slab
Loading on floor is udl=z, (on wall it is uvl)

Base Slab Continuously Resting on Soil 16

 When Tank is full, the base
slab will be designed like
normal fixed ended slab/raft
(either one-way or two way)
for total upward bearing
pressure

q = P/A

This pressure will develop

positive moment at support
and negative moment in mid-
 q span.

16

Base Slab Continuously Resting on Soil We must check that,17 at

supports, how much moment
is transferred from wall to

base slab, for tank full (water
load) and tank empty case
(soil load) , soil load develop
positive and water load
transfer negative moment at
support.

The bottom steel in middle of

base slab can also be
provided considering the
water load, considering tank
filled upto critical depth.

AS ALWAYS THE CRITICAL

CONDITION PREVAILS FOR
WATER RETAINING STRUCTURES
