1 SCOPE

The scope of this document is:

 to trace AW139 helicopter EMI incompatibility for all kits reported in RFM;
 to provide the means to check EMI incompatibilities for all AW139 helicopter configuration.

These two aspects are approached in relation both to the new certification of the kits installed on the helicopter
and to the kits which have been already certified.

Since the first issue of this handbook, the RFM will report no more the EMI incompatibilities between kits.

2 APPLICABILITY

This handbook is intended to be applied to all the AW139 helicopters both short nose (A) and long nose (B).

A: Aircraft Serial Number Short Nose from 31001 up to 31200 and from 41001 up to 41200
B: Aircraft Serial Number Long Nose from 31201 and from 41201

4.2 Definition

Any modification (new kits, equipment or AW139 basic helicopter modification) is defined as "EMC sensitive"
if one at least of the following conditions are met:

 there is a change in the electric system on the basic helicopter configuration;

 there is an electrical provision or wiring required by the new installation to be added to the basic helicopter
electrical installation;

 there is an electrical device inside the new kit or equipment to be installed on the helicopter.

Therefore, when a modification which involves an "EMC sensitive" item is to be certified, the modification
must be EMC tested with respect to the following EMC clearance logic described in this document.

An EMC issue during flight could result in an hazard for the helicopter, or cause the malfunction of the item
itself which is the source of the interference.

6 REFERENCE JAR RULES

All the EMC tests performed on the helicopter both on ground and in flight, described in the documents
mentioned above are intended for the safety of the flight but also to demonstrate compliance to the following
JAR 29 AMDT 3 rules:

 29.1301 d)
 29.1309 a)
 29.1327 a) b)
 29.1431 b)

7 EMC CLEARANCE LOGIC PROCEDURE

All production helicopters are subjected to a dedicated EMC evaluation. In particular:

1. Every 1st kit installation classified EMI sensitive needs a dedicated assessment (through the standard
NDC process ref. [1], [2]), in order to demonstrate compliance to the JAR rules.

2. Every no-hazard equipment installation, is checked out through a dedicated ATP EMC for no-hazard
equipment certification [4], according to [5]. The rules to assure that the required functions are not
subject to interference are provided in the certification basis of the rotorcraft.
The No Hazard equipment is initially installed and certified through a cross-matrix operational check
for EMC. These tests consisting of operating the No Hazard equipment in question and checking
visually for any indication of interference versus the EMC sensitive avionic systems.

3. Every production helicopter is checked out through a dedicated ATP EMC [3], addressing the basic
helicopter systems. These procedure is carried out by visual assessment on the electro-avionic
equipment/systems installed on board to verify, when operated in various combination, that no
malfunction or unacceptable degradation of performance will appear in the electromagnetic
environment generated between them.

If there is an incompatibility between two or more kits, the table in the Annex A, will report the cross matrix
kits incompatibilities or restrictions

point of view is unknown so must be considered incompatible.
The table also contain any restrictions due to the EMI incompatibilities.

In the table the equipment are sorted by the relative supplement number in the RFM.
