Activities
Complete the following activities:

1. Carefully read the following:

This project requires you to participate in two different work activities that contribute
to the health and safety of self and others.
To complete this assessment, you will carry out pre-start checks under your
supervisor and complete work activities following all the procedures and
instructions that apply to your work setting.

Vocational education and training is all about gaining and developing practical
skills that are industry relevant and that can help you to succeed in your chosen
career. For this reason, we are giving you the choice to base this project on a
real workplace or you may base this on the college where you are taking this
course (your RTO). This will mean that you are applying your knowledge and
skills in a relevant, practical and meaningful way to your own situation!

To do your assessment, you will need access to the following (from your real
workplace or RTO/college):

• The WHS laws that apply to your work environment/state

• Organisational Policy and Procedure documents

• At least one Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

• Work instructions to complete your activities

• Workplace equipment and resources needed to perform work activities.

You will also need to interact and consult with others. This may be either directly
with your actual supervisor and colleagues at a real workplace, or your assessor
and fellow students can play the roles of the relevant colleagues.
You will be collecting evidence for this unit in a Project Portfolio. The steps you
need to take are outlined below.
Before you begin, open your Project Portfolio and complete page 4.

2. Identify work tasks, policies and procedures

You must identify two activities you will complete for this project and the review the
WHS documents that apply to your work environment before you carry out work.
If you are basing the assessment on your own workplace (or a workplace where
you are doing a traineeship), you must choose two activities you will perform. You
must also review the WHS laws, and organisational policies and procedures you
need to follow to report and record WHS issues.
If you are basing this project on the college where you are taking this course your
assessor will give you two activities to perform at the facilities of your RTO. Your

assessor will also provide the documents you must review. This will include
relevant WHS laws, policies and procedures that apply to your specific RTO setting.
You may also use your Student Handbook for information.
Open your Project Portfolio to Section 1 and complete the questions. In order to do

and concerns about safety in your workplace

3. Meet with your supervisor to carry out pre-start checks and tasks

As part of this assessment, you will perform two activities in a way that is healthy
and safe for yourself and others. In order to do this, you must first carry out pre-
start systems and equipment checks according to the WHS policies and procedures
that you have identified.
If you are basing this project on the college where you are taking this course your
assessor will choose the activities and give you a time and place for performing
your pre-start checks. They will be playing the role of your supervisor and you will
be use the equipment at the college to do the pre-start checks and activities.
If you are basing this project on your own workplace, you must do your pre-start
equipment and system checks with your supervisor present. You must attach
evidence of carrying out pre-start checks to Section 1 of your Project Portfolio (this
may be a Checklist you must complete in your work setting that your supervisor can
confirm, or a video of you performing the checks).
Open your Project Portfolio to Section 1 and continue completing the questions.
While you are performing the checks, you must:

• make sure you follow all instructions, protocols, procedures and WHS
legislative requirements (you will be assessed on this).

• tell your supervisor (assessor) what you are doing as you perform the checks,
and how the checks will help to prevent injury
After you have completed the checks, you must

work environment
