@shomadjozi
Do you have
a signature hairstyle?
‘Yes! “Madjozi braids” –
cornrows with braids on the
sides. While I lived in Senegal,
I noticed the young girls had
beautiful braids with beads
– but as soon as they hit
puberty, they start relaxing
their hair. That’s weird for
me. It’s as though we’ve been
taught that certain hairstyles
are immature or inappropriate,
and that “beauty” means
we have to completely erase
ourselves. I want to create
a version of beauty that is
more considerate towards
me, my hair and my history.’
What’s your relationship
like with your hair?
‘I had to learn it. Isn’t
that crazy? As black people,
we’re more equipped with
the knowledge of how to
straighten our hair rather
than how to deal with it
as it grows out of our scalp.
Over time, I’ve learnt how
it curls and how to braid it
without destroying my edges,
and I’ve become comfortable
with the fact that it doesn’t
grow very long. I’m happy.’
Where do you get
your hair inspo?

‘I love lengthy,

They’re fun and

What’s your
relationship like
with your hair?
‘My natural hair?
I haven’t worn
my natural hair
in years, mainly
because it can be
so hard to maintain.
I don’t have a love-
hate relationship
with my hair;
it’s more of an
understanding,

that goes into
maintaining it.
With my often-

What’s your relationship

‘I’ve always had a good

I’ve always loved it. I know

You do yoga. That’s the word from a ground-breaking recent

One-Track Mind
Read e-mails. Facebook. Go to toilet. Have irrelevant conversation
with colleague. When it comes to so-called ‘multitasking’, the struggle
is deÀnitely real. Which is why those in the know (the clever folks who
conducted a study at Stanford University) have proclaimed mono-tasking
the new multitasking. Apparently, the more we try to do at once, the
less able to get creative and develop emotional intelligence we become.
PHOTOGRAPHY AMY SLOANE TEXT AMY GRIER

The remedy? Avoid computers (yes, phones too!) for the Àrst hour of
the day, because studies show that time away from e-mail improves
focus – and do the task that involves the most concentration later in
the morning: research shows it’s when your body is at its optimum
temperature to aid cognitive thinking. Wearing a quilted onesie
all day does not yield the same results, apparently. ■

not just (really) big hair and the

author of How Rich People Think,

us non-billionaires think with
a ‘lottery’ mentality, while those
who have propelled themselves to
the one percent (that’s the richest
one percent of the population who
own half the world’s wealth) tend
to have an ‘action’ mentality. ‘While
the masses are waiting to pick the
right (lottery) numbers, the great
ones are solving problems,’ he
says. So if you want to add some
more zeros to your bank balance

time to adopt these habits and
