Greek Drama and Theater
Ancient Greece was the birthplace of Western Drama. The archaeological studies and historical
writings are the bases of today’s knowledge of Greek theater. It was a religious rite honoring Dionysius,
the god of wine and fertility. Among the followers of Dionysius were women called maenads. The
highest form of the plays came to be known as tragedy. Tragedy in Greek means “goat song”. Tragedy I
believe to be not the 'goat-song', but the 'harvest-song' of the cereal tragos, the form of spelt known as
'the goat'."
