MUSIC
Different Singing Styles for the Opera:
1. Recitative – It means imitating the pattern and rhythm of speech. The explanations and storytelling parts are
half-spoken and half-sung.
2. Aria – When a character expresses feelings through a flowing melody, it is called aria. It forms a very significant
part of an opera, giving an opportunity for the leading characters to express deep feelings of love, farewell, and
the like.
3. Bel Canto – It is an Italian term for “beautiful singing.” Singers of the opera began using this vocal style in Italy
during the 17th century.
4. Castrato – Young boys were castrated before they reached puberty to avoid the deepening of the voice. The
main roles of the opera were written for the castrato.
 Song style –It is a group of art songs that is connected by a musical idea.
 Lied (lieder is the plural form) – It is a German art song.
 Chanson – It is a French art song.
 Operetta – It is a small opera where the characters speak between songs, unlike in an opera where the
entire drama is set to music. Since the operetta is meant mainly to entertain; there are lovely cheerful
melodies, comic situations, and light romance. There is no such thing as a tragic operetta, unlike in
operas which are mostly tragic.
 Parlor songs – It is intended to be performed in the parlors of houses, usually by amateur singers and
pianists. Parlor music repertoire frequently included sentimental songs about romantic and maternal
love, odes and tributes to historical figures and leaders of the day, and patriotic songs.
 Melodrama – It arose from two factors: the popularization of Romanticism and the Gothic; and the evasion of
the restrictive licensing laws of England and France. In spite of its lack of literary merit, melodrama became the
most popular dramatic form of the 19th century.
 Vaudeville – a farce with music. In the United States, the term connotes a light entertainment popular from the
mid-1890s until the early 1930s that consisted of 10 to 15 individual unrelated acts, featuring magicians,
acrobats, comedians, trained animals, jugglers, singers, and dancers. It is the counterpart of the music hall and
variety in England.

facing the audience
