USING CONTEXT CLUES

CONTEXT CLUES are hints found within a


sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader
can use to understand the meanings of new or
unfamiliar words.
TYPES OF CONTEXT CLUES

1. INFERENCE CLUES/ GENERAL


CONTEXT CLUES- a word’s definition is not
explained.
Example: Tim’s pugnacious behavior made his
opponent back down.

2.DEFINITION CLUES- a word’s definition


is explained in the sentence.

Example: A conga is a barrel- shaped drum.

3. EXAMPLE CLUES- an example of the


word is given following the sentence or within
the sentence.
Example: She made a school infraction by
throwing snowballs at recess.

4. ANTONYM CLUES- The word is clarified


by giving the opposite meaning.

Example: Littering is an infraction .We need to


respect our school.

5. SYNONYM CLUES- Other word with


similar meaning is used in the sentence.

violation of the law.
