Communicable
diseases
Communicable diseases
are caused by pathogens
(organisms that cause
disease) and can be
passed from
one person to another.
They are also known as
infectious diseases and
include sexually
transmitted
infections (STIs), air-
borne diseases, water-
borne diseases, food-
borne diseases and
vector-borne
diseases (see Tables 12.3,
12.4 and 12.5).
Non-
communicable
diseases
Non-communicable
diseases are not caused by
pathogens and cannot be
passed from one person to
another. Many are
chronic, i.e. they are long-
term medical conditions
that often get worse over
time.
**Diabetes:**
- **Signs/Symptoms:**
Increased thirst,
frequent urination,
fatigue, blurred vision,
and slow wound
healing.
- **Causes:** Type 1 -
autoimmune response,
Type 2 - lifestyle
factors (poor diet, lack
of exercise), and
gestational diabetes
during pregnancy.
- **Treatment:** Type
1 - insulin therapy,
Type 2 - lifestyle
changes, oral
medications, or insulin.
- **Prevention:**
Healthy diet, regular
exercise, weight
management, and blood
sugar monitoring.
**Cardiovascular
Diseases:**
- **Signs/Symptoms:**
Chest pain (angina),
shortness of breath,
fatigue, dizziness, and
irregular heartbeat.
- **Causes:** High
blood pressure, high
cholesterol, smoking,
obesity, diabetes, and
family history.
- **Treatment:**
Medications (statins,
beta-blockers), lifestyle
changes (diet, exercise),
and surgical procedures
(angioplasty, bypass
surgery).
- **Prevention:**
Healthy diet, regular
exercise, not smoking,
managing stress, and
regular check-ups.
