Cylinders
Cylinders are essentially just prisms with the cross sections of circles.

Recall that;

V olume of a solid = unif orm cross sectional area (the slice) ×height

V = A×h (Area of rectangle ×height)

V = lbh

F or all prismims with unif orm cross sections, V = A ×h

Then by extension the formula for the volume of a cylinder is going to be;

As a cylinder is a ‘circular prism’, we can use the f ormula,

V = A ×h

H ere the cross − section of a circle is A = πr2

T hen the volume of a cylinder is

Volume and Capacity Problems

You probably have seen the following units of measure for volume:

1000mm3 = 1cm3

1 000 000cm3 = 1m3

However the capacity of an object is measured in millilitres (mL), litres (L) or kilolitres (kL)

Where do you think each of these measurements would be used?

TRIVIA: say for example I had an irregular shaped object such as the meteorite displayed below.
What is the quickest way to determine the VOLUME of such an object?

Then, 1cm3 = _______mL and 1000cm3 = ________L and 1m3 = ________L?

Knowing this, complete the following examples:
