CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Background of Research

Modern English is widely considered to be the lingua franca considered to be the

standard language in a wide variety of fields, including computer coding, international
business, and higher education. And if English proficiency would be the basis of
readiness to college, students that already are proficient in English may have an
advantage since our knowledge in English is very useful not only in college but also
after college. Proficiency, pronounced as ''pro-FISH-en-cee,'' comes from the Latin word
proficere, meaning ''accomplish, make progress, be useful.'' Now, if you have achieved
proficiency in something, you have done well at gaining skill. That leads you on to our
topic English Proficiency as a Basis of Readiness to College among Grade-12 Students
at Cavite National High School - Senior High School, if students are proficient enough in
English then they have gained good skill that may be used in college.

This study seeks to ascertain the level of English proficiency of Cavite National High
School-Senior High School students in grades 12. In order to identify the students who
are proficient in English, researchers may need to know the students' capacity for using
English as a language while speaking or reporting, as well as their capacity for
pronouncing and reading English words correctly. English is an international language
used to communicate with others, so being proficient in it is a good start before entering
college since most of the professors there teach using English as their language.
Researchers also want to inform students that English proficiency can also be
considered as a basis of readiness to college. And as the researchers thought about it,
English is an international language practicing, learning, and giving importance to it,
thinking that it could be a basis of readiness to college. Researchers thought, why not
do a study about it, find out how many students are proficient in English, and gather
data on how English students can learn or practice to be proficient in English. Measure
those students who do agree that English can be the basis of readiness to college. And
lastly to determine the total numbers of Grade-12 students in Cavite National High
School - Senior High that are proficient in English and ready to enter college.

According to the article “The Effects of English Language Proficiency on Adjustment

to University Life’’ by Maureen Snow Andrade, students are generally satisfied with their
proficiency, appreciate English as a Second Language courses, and feel their English is
improved through course work and social interaction. Professors feel students' skills are
adequate but could be improved, and report adjusting their teaching approaches to
accommodate NNES.

Research Questions

This study specifically intends to answer the possible questions:

What are the various ways students can be proficient in English.

Is English proficiency the only basis for us to say that a student is ready to go to college.

Is English proficiency only applicable in college.

Research Objective

Purpose of this study is to determine the percentage of Cavite National High School -
Senior High School students who are proficient in English. English is becoming more
significant in the rapidly developing technological era. Every student should be
concerned about this kind of situation because it will have an impact on their abilities
and future. Some students have access to English education, but not all do, and not
everyone who does may be able to speak, read, write, and listen to English fluently.
There are various reasons why some students are better in the usage of English than
others, and this suggests that different students have very diverse levels of skill in
acquiring mastery in the language.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

Including variables in this study the improvements of skills, knowledge of students

and their success in being proficient in English. Excluded variables may be the
measurement of students' intelligence and their vocabulary in English. The participants
that are going to be surveyed are the Grade 12 students in Cavite National High School-
Senior High School Academic Year 2022-2023.

We as researchers will use surveys or google form to collect data that we needed in
this study. The numbers of Grade 12 students at Cavite National High School-Senior
High School are proficient in English. Being proficient in English is required in work,
applying for a job or interview and use in communication in social interaction. As the
researchers, those are the delimitations in this study.
