AA Preliminary Exam Paper2 [62 marks]
1a. [3 marks]
The following diagram shows part of a circle with centre O and radius 4 cm.

Chord AB has a length of 5 cm and AÔ B = θ.

Find the value of θ, giving your answer in radians.

1b. [3 marks]
Find the area of the shaded region.
2a. [2 marks]
The following diagram shows a right-angled triangle, ABC, with AC = 10 cm, AB = 6 cm
and BC = 8 cm.
The points D and F lie on [AC].
[BD] is perpendicular to [AC].
BEF is the arc of a circle, centred at A.
The region 𝑅 is bounded by [BD], [DF] and arc BEF.

̂ C.
Find B A

2b. [5 marks]
Find the area of 𝑅.
3a. [2 marks]
The first two terms of a geometric sequence are 𝑢1 = 2.1 and 𝑢2 = 2.226.
Find the value of 𝑟.

3b. [2 marks]
Find the value of 𝑢10.

3c. [3 marks]
Find the least value of 𝑛 such that 𝑆𝑛 > 5543.
4a. [3 marks]
The following diagram shows the quadrilateral ABCD.

AB = 6.73 cm, BC = 4.83 cm, BĈ D = 78.2° and CD = 3.80 cm.

Find BD.

4b. [4 marks]
The area of triangle ABD is 18.5 cm2. Find the possible values of θ.
5a. [3 marks]
A café serves sandwiches and cakes. Each customer will choose one of the following three
options; buy only a sandwich, buy only a cake or buy both a sandwich and a cake.
The probability that a customer buys a sandwich is 0.72 and the probability that a
customer buys a cake is 0.45.
Find the probability that a customer chosen at random will buy
both a sandwich and a cake.

5b. [1 mark]
only a sandwich.
5c. [4 marks]
On a typical day 200 customers come to the café.
It is known that 46 % of the customers who come to the café are male, and that 80 % of
these buy a sandwich.
A female customer is selected at random. Find the probability that she buys a sandwich.
6. [6 marks]
The quadratic equation 𝑥 2 − 2𝑘𝑥 + (𝑘 − 1) = 0 has roots 𝛼 and 𝛽 such that 𝛼 2 + 𝛽2 = 4.
Without solving the equation, find the possible values of the real number 𝑘.
7a. [3 marks]
A pan, in which to cook a pizza, is in the shape of a cylinder. The pan has a diameter of 35
cm and a height of 0.5 cm.

Calculate the volume of this pan.

7b. [4 marks]
A chef had enough pizza dough to exactly fill the pan. The dough was in the shape of a
sphere.
Find the radius of the sphere in cm, correct to one decimal place.

7c. [2 marks]
The pizza was cooked in a hot oven. Once taken out of the oven, the pizza was placed in a
dining room.
The temperature, 𝑃, of the pizza, in degrees Celsius, °C, can be modelled by
𝑃(𝑡) = 𝑎(2.06)−𝑡 + 19, 𝑡 ≥ 0
where 𝑎 is a constant and 𝑡 is the time, in minutes, since the pizza was taken out of the
oven.
When the pizza was taken out of the oven its temperature was 230 °C. Find the value of 𝑎.
7d. [2 marks]
Find the temperature that the pizza will be 5 minutes after it is taken out of the oven.

7e. [2 marks]
The pizza can be eaten once its temperature drops to 45 °C.
Calculate, to the nearest second, the time since the pizza was taken out of the oven until it
can be eaten.

7f. [1 mark]
In the context of this model, state what the value of 19 represents.
8a. [3 marks]
𝜋 𝜋
Consider the function 𝑔(𝑥) = 4 cos 𝑥 + 1, 𝑎 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2 where 𝑎 < 2 .
𝜋
For 𝑎 = − 2 , sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑔(𝑥). Indicate clearly the maximum and minimum
values of the function.

8b. [1 mark]
Write down the least value of 𝑎 such that 𝑔 has an inverse.

8c. [1 mark]
For the value of 𝑎 found in part (b), write down the domain of 𝑔−1 .

8d. [2 marks]
For the value of 𝑎 found in part (b), find an expression for 𝑔−1 (𝑥).
