Introduction:
Physical Education has been defined by various authors to a direction toward an emphasis on
lifetime skills. WUEST and BUNCHER(1995) defined physical education as an education
process that uses physical activity as a means to help individuals acquire skills, fitness,
knowledge and attitude that contribute to their optimal development and well-being.
More so, Physical Education, herein after referred to as P.E. is planned, sequential instruction
that promotes lifelong physical activity. It is designed to develop basic abilities.
Leading to the realization of the different concerns as defined above it, most authors have
written three(3) main functions of P.E. 1) biologic 2) integrative and 3) social.
Objectives:
At the end of the session, the student is expected to:
1. Discuss the importance of physical activities for the enhancement of growth and
development.

Discussion:
Brief history of Physical Education
Physical education has existed since the earliest stages of humanity, with which to
survive in hostile environment was the primary concern
Formal physical education was first observed during the ancient times as a component
of military training in the case of the ancient roman citizens.
P.E. was a form of entertainment for ancient Greece.
P.E. programs were organized by 700 B.C. at the educational establishment called
Gymnasia.
Greece laid the foundation for the present Olympic Games which were first held in
776B.C. and continued every four years thereafter.
Middle Ages (from 400s to 1500s), Physical Education had its dark ages due to
disinterest of the people in physical education.
Many sports and other physical activities were considered sinful, especially in Europe.
However, it was during the renaissance period when the interest in greek and Roman
culture was revived. This renaissance period helped to interpret the importance of Physical
Education to the public.
1700s PE developed significantly as it was promoted in the masses.
1800s, PE found its way to formal schools in Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom and
America.
German and Swedish program stressed special importance to Gymnastics and exercise
routines.
Great Britain is known as the home of outdoor sports which utilized a program borrowed
ideas from all other European sources.
1990s, the most significant development was the large scale provision of PE programs
for girls and people with disabilities.
20th century, three philosophies emerge to influence the direction of physical education.

equipment needed very few places are set up to do this kind of measurement.
