CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background

Tourism is an important sector for many countries in the world. This

industry is predicted to be the vast growing industry in the last decade and

demand the most menpower usage among other industries. Its development has

multiplier effects. It brings benefit to the several sectors, such as hotels,

restaurants, transportation, the souvenir markets, hospital business, creative

business (advertisements, media), garments (uniform), etc. This sector also brings

a large amount of income for the countries.

Based on the fact, Indonesia wants to participate in developing tourism

industry. Indonesia is included into archipelago country. The country has various

ethnics with different cultures that make it becomes one of recommended country

to travel. This country also has great potential in tourism industry, especially in

tourist attraction or tourist destination. It is an important component in tourism

industry. This tourist attraction holds a key in attracting many tourists, both

domestic and foreign.

Central Java as a part of Indonesia also has great natural views, cultural

ethnics, and historical buildings. It consists of many cities, such as Semarang,

Solo/Surakarta, Sragen, Boyolali, Wonogiri, Cilacap, etc. The cities in Central

Java have many tourist attractions which attract many tourists to visit this region.

Besides the most popular city in Central Java is Solo/Surakarta. Solo has beautiful

Pustaka Museum, Balekambang and Banjarsari Park, Kauman and Laweyan

Batik Market, Klewer Traditional Market, Galabo(Gladag Langen Bogan),

Ngarsopuro Night Market, Sriwedari Park, Jurug Zoo, etc.

Puro Mangkunegaran as one of popular historical buildings in Solo has

many histories and artifacts. The artifacts can be seen in the architecture of

buildings (aristocratic building), sculptures, paintings, and the priceless

collections of Puro Mangkunegaran. In addition, the history can be heard from

local guides.

Local guides in Mangkunegaran have several responsibilities in order to

satisfy the tourists during the tour in Puro Mangkunegaran. In this case, the roles

of local guides are important indeed because they should accompany the tourists

in the Puro Mangkunegaran tour. Then, they should tell the history of Puro

Mangkunegaran until the end of the tour. Based on the reason above, the roles and

the responsibilities of local guides are related to the tourist satisfaction. Therefore,

the title of this final project is “The Roles and the Responsibilities of Local

Guides in Puro Mangkunegaran Surakarta”.

B. Objectives

1. To describe the roles and the responsibilities of local guides in Puro

Mangkunegaran

2. To identify the constraints the local guides have and how they overcome

them

C. Benefits

1. The readers

Hopefully, this final project becomes a reference to the readers how to be a

tour guide, especially in Puro Mangkunegaran.

2. Students of English Diploma

Hopefully, this final project gives an over-view to the students of English

Diploma program who are interested in tourism.

3. Local Guides in Puro Mangkunegaran

Hopefully, this final project report gives information to the local guides

about the problems of guiding in Puro Mangkunegaran. Thus, they can

overcome the problems.
