COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, SOLIDARITY, AND CITIZENSHIP

FORMS OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT THAT CONTRIBUTE TO
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH SOLIDARITY

Why Direct Service?

A community is a group of people in the same geographic area, under common laws,
that has a sense of fellowship, belonging, and obligation to the group. The community has
five functions these are the production-distribution-consumption, socialization, social control,
social participation, and mutual support. Communities come in different, shapes, sizes and
characteristics. It also come in different types depending on the quality of human association,
the scope of geographical boundaries, functions of subdivisions, and avenues of social
interactions. There are three types of community in terms of shared political territory and
heritage, the Urban, Rural, and Suburban communities. The emergence of community
involves both interaction among residents and community action. Community action refers to
the process of building social relationships in pursuit of common community interests and
maintaining local life. Community action is seen as being the foundation of the community
development process because it encompasses deliberate and positive efforts designed to meet
the general needs of all local residents. This process represents multiple and diverse interests
in the locality, and consequently provides a more comprehensive approach to community
development. Therefore, the action process is intended to benefit the entire community and to
cut across divides that may exist like class, race, social, often arising from an emotional or
social need. In the process of community development, local action focuses on the
improvement of social well-being and involves people working together in pursuit of their
general interests. This power is manifested in the ability of individuals to come together and
work toward common goals. When diverse individuals and their organizations interact with
one another, they begin to mutually understand the needs and wants that are common to all
residents. Such action provides local residents with the ability to retain community identities,
maintain local control over decision-making, and address their own development needs. It is
a central component of community and social well-being. The existence of community action
directs attention to the fact that local people acting together often have the power to transform
and change their community. Community action and corresponding development can be seen
as the process of building relationships that increase the adaptive capacity of local people
within a common territory. This adaptive capacity is reflected in the ability of people to
manage, utilize, and enhance those resources available to them in addressing their local
issues. As long as people care about each other and the place they live, every community has
the potential for such collective action. This ability allows distinctions to be made between
simple aggregates of people and actual communities. The form Direct Service of Community
Engagement means giving personal time and energy to address immediate community needs
and the service offered by us from time to time that let us access the account using an Access
Terminal. Examples included are tutoring, serving food at a shelter, building or repairing
homes, and neighborhood park clean-ups. Direct Service has huge impact to community
development. The development of strong, vibrant, and healthy communities has long been a
tenet of the social work profession. As facilitators, organizers, counselors, and advocates,
social workers have an important voice in helping communities overcome the barriers to
necessary change. They also provide the energy for transformation — empowering residents
with the knowledge, resources, and capacity to self-direct and self-govern their lives and
circumstances. Also, it connects people and ideas for a better lifestyle, create and strengthens
communities, develops community identity, enrich everyone by personal learning and
recreation, give sense of ownership and sustain a strong democracy. We, everyone needs
those impacts for a better and best community living. Direct Service is very simple and
common form of community engagement, through doing this thing, standing as one, helping
everyone, and engaging anyone nothing is impossible we can achieve the best development
of community we want.
