LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 7 QUARTER: 4 WEEK: 6 DAY: 1

COMPETENCY & Learning Competency: Illustrates the measures of central tendency (mean, median and mode) of a
OBJECTIVES statistical data.M7SP-IVf-1
Learning Objectives:
: 1. Define the mean, mode and median of statistical data.
2. Describe the data using information from the mean, median and mode.
3. Demonstrate appreciation of defining mean, median and mode as important skills needed to
understand the statistical data.
CONTENT : MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY

2. Do you still know how to compute an average? How?
C. Presentation
Review previous lesson by letting the students answer the exercise. Call somebody from the class to the
activity on the board.
Arrange the collected data values in ascending order with their corresponding frequencies.

The set of data shows a score of 8 students in their 10- item first formative test for the Fourth Quarter in
Mathematics 7.
2 6 5 8 2 5 5 3
Answer Key:
Scores Frequency
2 II-2
3 I-1
5 III-3
6 I-1
8 I-1
The teacher lets the students realize that arranging the data in ascending and determining the
frequencies are important skills needed to understand the concept of finding the mean, median and
mode of the ungrouped data.

The teacher processes the answers of the above Activity through the following questions:
1. What score is typical to the group of students? Why?
2. What score frequently appears?
3. What score appears to be in the middle?
4. How many students fall below this score?
Answer Key:
1. The students may have a hard time figuring out what “typical” means. You may expound this
further by using the word representative or maybe the number that can best describe the
performance of the students taking the test. The answers may vary. Some may point out the
median or the mean. Be sure to ask the students to justify their answers.
2. 5
3. 5
4. 3
D.Discussion/Abstraction
The teacher discusses and illustrates on how to find the mean, mode and median of the example
presented above.
The set of data shows a score of 8 students in their 10- item first formative test for the Fourth Quarter in
Mathematics 7.
2 6 5 8 2 5 5 3
Answer Key:
2+ 6+5+8+ 2+ 5+5+3
1.Mean number of scores= = 4.5
8
The mean or average score of the 8 students in their 10- item first formative test for the Fourth
Quarter in Mathematics 7.
1. The mode is 5 since it occurs most frequently.
 The set of data is unimodal since it contains only one mode.
 If it contains two modes the set is bimodal
 If it contains three modes the set is trimodal
 It is also possible that the set has no mode.
2. There are 8 scores. Since 8 is an even number, the median is the mean of the two middle values.
a. Middle position = 8 + 1 = 4.5th position
2
b. Arrange the scores in ascending (or descending) order.
2, 2, 3, 5, 5, 5, 6, 8
c. Median=mean of 4th and 5th values
5+5 =5
2
The median is 5, since it is in the 4.5th position.
Guide Question:
What information can we get from the data?
The mean of 4.5 gives the best information of the average scores of the 8 students in their 10-item test
as it takes into accounts all the given data.

E. Exercises
The following sets of data show the weekly income [in peso] of ten selected households living in
two different Districts in Bohol.

First District: 150, 1500, 1700, 1800, 3000, 2100, 1700, 1500, 1750, 1200
Second District: 1000, 1200, 1200, 1150, 1800, 1800, 1800, 2000, 1470, 8000
a. Compute for the mean and the median for each Barangay.
b. What information can we get from these values?

Answer Key:
a. First District [Mean is 1345, Median is 1700]
Second District [Mean is 2142, Median is 1635]
b. Using the mean value, it seems that Second District household income is far greater than that
of Second District. However, using the median, it seems that the two are almost the same.
Emphasize that the Median is more appropriate in this case because of extreme values. In the
case of First District, the mean is affected by the very low value which is 150 and in the case of
Second District, the mean is affected by a very high value which is 8000. We are looking at a
representative value (which is typical to the group) for each barangay that would give an
appropriate description of household income, therefore, the median is used because it is a
practical estimate of each.
F. Generalization
The teacher summarizes the mathematical skills used to find the mean, mode and median of the
statistical data of the ungrouped and the definition of mean, median and mode through the following
questions:
1. What is mean, mode and median?
2. How do you find the mean, mode and median of the ungrouped data?
Answers shall be drawn from the students. Teachers may give additional information if needed in order
to have common understanding.
Possible answers:
1.-The mean is commonly referred to as the average of all values.
-The most frequent score/s in the given set of data is called the mode.
-The median is also an “average” score. It is the middle score in the list after the scores are arranged in
decreasing or increasing order. How do you get the median for an even number of scores in a set
2.-To compute for the mean, add all the scores and divide the sum by the number of scores. It is the
easiest “average” to compute.
-It is also an “average” score. A data set may have two modes (and hence the data set is called
bimodal).
-It is the middle score in the list after the scores are arranged in decreasing or increasing order.
G. Application
Measures of central tendency is of great help in business, livelihood and in our healthcare
specially in determining the average volume of how much should be produced and delivered.
H. Evaluation
The teacher lets the students answer individually the formative assessment.
Find the mean, median and mode for each of the following sets of data.
1. 9,10,12,14,14,15,18
Answer Key:
1. Mean:13.14
Median:14
Mode:14
I. Agreement/Assignment
Find the mean, median and mode.
1. 4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9, 10
