1. Imagine you are asked by an NGO nr a government organization


to undertake an ethnographic study of a rural community that you
are not familiar with to enable them undertake development
activities there:

(a) Explain what is meant by ethnographic study and

(b) Indicate how you would go about this task paying attention to
community entry techniques, the cultural or social
anthropological methods of gathering data and ethical issues
involved in the study of human societies.

2. (a) Describe the processes through which an individual becomes ancestor.


(b) Discuss the roles that ancestors are believed to play in
traditional society. Illustrate your answer with examples.

3. With examples, briefly explain the following anthropological tenns


and indicate their importance to the individual and society.
a. Matrilineal Descent
b. Patrilineal Descent
c. Endogamy
d. Exogamy
e. Incest Taboo
