The story “The Interlopers” uses its omnipotent narrator to great effect in creating an instance of

dramatic irony. Using this trope it allows for the possibility that one or more of the characters
involved may die by the end of the story. We know this is a possibility because, in instances
where there is an omnipotent narrator, it implies that neither of the characters is narrating or
telling the story meaning that neither had to survive to narrate the story. It also helps to create
almost a sense of dramatic irony at the end. We as an audience know what happened to both of
the noble men but their families will not. Additionally, the use of an omnipotent narrator allows us
to sympathize with the plight of both characters.
