What is Fake News?
● According to the university of Oregon fake news is information that is clearly fake but is passed off as
real news.
● This can take a variety of different forms including but not limited to click bait article, propaganda,
websites that claim to be satire but don’t advertise it and various other things.
● Fake News has been immensely damaging to societies trust in the news.
Negative Effects of Fake News
* Regulation would still allow for the existence of fake news and there will always
be individuals who are unable to distinguish real news from fraudulent news.
*Not all people in the world are educated on how to analyze information
Research supporting a Ban
* A study by the conducted by Stanford tested students ability to differentiate
between false sources and legitimate news.
*This study generally found that students’ skills in differenting real from fake was
lacking.
*Students displayed an inability to look at sources critically to the point that the
article described their ability to distinguish between fake and real news as “a threat
to democracy”.
*With this level of ignorance among the public fake news should not be allowed.
Education alone is not enough
● Some suggest that we should simply educate the populace on the identification of
fake news.
● Education only is not effective solution. Not all people are taught or use this skill
● Currently we teach how to identify fake news and how to distinguish between it and
the real thing and our society still displays the consequences of fake news
Who Should Be Responsible for Fake News
*Multiple agencies and organizations can work together to ban fake news:
* Search Engines must stop taking fees for advertisements
* Govt. agencies must take steps to regulate news companies and apply
consequences for fake news
