Background and Rationale

Animals exist in a variety of environments, which comprises forests, deserts,

oceans, and grasslands. With increasing population growth and human activity that
disturbs the natural habitat, animals must learn to adapt to these kinds of threats as well.
Some might struggle to fit in, but what causes them to adapt to such surroundings? In
what way did the animals use adaptation as a survival mechanism?
In biology, adaptation refers to the process by which a species becomes fitted to
its environment; it is the result of natural selection’s acting upon heritable variation over
several generations. Adaption is what helps the animals stay alive in their current
surrounding and situation. It has evolved over time. An animal's environment consists of
many different things. To survive, the animal must learn to adapt to the environment, the
types of food plants that grow in it, and other animals that may be predators or
competitors. Animals have developed physical and behavioral systems that allow them
to survive in a variety of ecological environments through evolution and adaptation.
Animals’ adaptation matches the way they are living. Different groups of animals
such as fish, reptiles, birds, mammals and amphibians have their own general adaptation
mechanisms. It can range from the shape of its mouth or beak, the thickness of its fur, or
even the color of the animal itself. For example, the gills that indicate Pomacea
cancaliculata's (Apple Snail's) adaptation to settings with low oxygen levels allowed them
to live in a variety of ecosystems, including swamps, ditches, ponds, and rivers. This is
common in wetlands and shallow seas. Camels have adapted to survive by their camel
hump, they use the hump as sustenance when there isn’t any food around for them.
Camels evolved to develop their hump because they live in a desert where there is a lack
of food for them to eat. in regards to the form of a feature that has evolved by natural
selection for a specific function, other examples include the long necks of giraffes for
feeding in the tops of trees, the streamlined bodies of aquatic fish and mammals, the
light bones of flying birds and mammals, and the long daggerlike canine teeth
of carnivores.
These adaptations allow a wide range of species to live in a variety of habitats.
They must have the right habitat in order to find the necessary food and space. These
adaptions can also protect animals for predators and harsh weathers. Each animal has
its own distinct structure and adaptations in order to maintain its existence.
