Focus: Number and algebra (5 lessons) -> Fractions

Concepts: Whole, part, equal parts, unequal, fraction, quarter (extending students)
Learning outcomes:
• “Describes mathematical situations using everyday language, actions, materials and
informal recordings MAe-1WM (New South Wales Government Education Standards
Authority [NESA], 2021)
• uses concrete materials and/or pictorial representations to support conclusions MAe-3WM
(NESA, 2021)
• describes two equal parts as half MAe-7NA “(NESA, 2021)

Lesson 1: Communicate through speaking, viewing, representing students existing understanding

of ‘whole’ and ‘half’

Cross curriculum priorities - > Literacy: whole, half, equal, unequal

Skills: Students are encouraged to engage in activities where they relate their existing knowledge
with observable objects. E.g., relating a whole with fruit, ball, moon, chairs, tables. The objective
is to encourage fluency in mathematical concepts. In addition, concrete material will be used. To
invite students to engage, ICT resources will be used when required. The students’ ability to
explain their understanding will be pursued throughout the lessons.

Tools: Cut-outs of food items e.g., pizza, roti, thosai i.e., foods related to students’ culture. Built
on their existing knowledge of whole, half, equal and unequal.

Assessment: Diagnostic assessment: Observation - Engaging in the activity, ability to identify the
concepts with ease, queries made, ability to explain to a peer, as well as eliciting their existing
knowledge of fractions
Lesson 2: Explaining students understanding of sharing ‘2 equal parts of a whole’

Skills: Improve mathematical fluency by using objects around them, explain the meaning of equal
parts of a whole within the group, sharing with a friend images or concrete materials in equal
parts.

Literacy: Seek students thinking of equal, part, same

Explain their understanding using their own words, images, or concrete items, in writing

Tools: Cut-outs of chapathi, pizza, roti i.e., cultural foods

Formative assessment where students identify by circling equal parts that make a whole, i.e., with
familiar objects e.g., cake, chocolate.

Lesson 3: Explaining students understanding of identify equal parts of a whole shape

Skills: Improve mathematical fluency by identifying parts of shapes. Students are invited to
explain same, equal, not equal. Build on existing knowledge by using it on images of shapes.

Explain their understanding using their own words, images, or concrete items, in writing

Tools: Cut-outs of shapes, students to colour / fold / cut and identify equal parts to explain
understanding

Formative assessment: colour, draw fold, cut the shape to explain understanding.

Lesson 4: I am learning to identify equal and unequal parts of a whole

Skills: Improve mathematical fluency by identifying parts of shapes. Students are invited to
explain same, equal, not equal. Build on existing knowledge by using it on images of shapes.

Explain their understanding using their own words, images, or concrete items, in writing

Tools: Cut-outs of shapes, students to colour / fold / cut and identify equal parts to explain
understanding

Formative assessment: colour, draw fold, cut the shape to explain understanding.

Lesson 5: Explaining how to make two equal groups / halves using pebbles / leaves / flowers that
we collect from field work?

Skills: Assess mathematical fluency gained during the past lessons through exploring and
engaging in the activity

Explain understanding verbally and visually.

Tools: baskets / buckets, trays

Summative assessment: use creative skills and make equal groups.
