The hidden price of cheap energy

First of all, what is Fracking? Well, Fracking is a technique that injects water, sand and chemicals at
high pressure into deep rock formations to extract oil and gas. Fracking has been proposed to
increase Colombia’s energy reserves and revenues, but it also poses serious risks for the
environment and the people; risks which overtake the advantages, in my opinion. Some of the
arguments against fracking are:

 Fracking consumes large amounts of water. It could affect the availability and quality of
this vital resource for human consumption and agriculture.
 Fracking produces toxic wastewater and solid waste, which could contaminate the soil, the
air and the groundwater. This could harm the health of the communities living near the
fracking sites, as well as the biodiversity and ecosystems of the country.
 Fracking can cause earthquakes, landslides and subsidence, which may damage the
infrastructure and the safety of the population.

Therefore, I honestly think that fracking would be disastrous for our country, as it would endanger
its natural resources, its public health and its environmental sustainability. If I were the
government, I would put on my pants and invest in renewable energy sources that are sustainable
and do not pose a threat to the environment or public health.
