Pathologie. Über die Schädlinge berichtet ISRAËL: Falter: Die in Deutschland noch in der
Umgebung vieler Städte (in Gärten, Parks auch als Alleebäume) anzutreffenden Maulbeerbäume
stammen aus einer Zeit, als man die Zucht der Seidenraupe auch nach Deutschland zu
verpflanzen trachtete. Die Blätter dieser Bäume sind die Hauptnahrung für die Seidenraupe, die
Larve des Spinners Bombyx mori. In der Gefangenschaft läßt sie sich auch mit den Blättern von
Scorzonera hispanica erziehen. Sonst leben gelegentlich auf Morusarten die Raupen von
Acronycta aceris L. Smerinthus tiliae L.: Die Zucht der letzteren ergab oft die braune Varietät.
Cossus ligniperda F. (Cossus cossus L.): Diese große Holzraupe fand ich bei Hanau am Main in
dem Holze von Wurzeln und Stämmen gefällter Maulbeerbäume. (Sonst lebt diese sehr
schädliche Raupe meist in den Stämmen von Weiden, Pappeln, Eichen, Birnen, Äpfeln, Kirschen
und anderen Laubhölzern.)

Glycyrrhiza glabra ist eine etwa mannshohe (1–2 m) Staude mit einem
riesigen, viele Quadratmeter bedeckenden Systeme von Wurzeln und
Ausläufern (vgl. die Abbild. in I, S. 324), die auch oberirdisch, wenn sie
ungehindert wachsen kann, zu einem wahren Dickicht werden kann. Wie
schwer es ist, eine ganze Pflanze mit allen ihren nicht selten 8 m langen
Ausläufern aus dem Boden zu graben, zeigt die von WEIGAND mitgeteilte
Sitte, daß die Gärtnerzunft von Bamberg ehedem als Meisterstück von den
Gesellen verlangte, daß sie eine Süßholzpflanze mit allen Wurzeln und
Ausläufern unversehrt aus dem Boden graben mußten (FLÜCKIGER). Wenn
man sie sich selbst überläßt, okkupiert sie bald weite Strecken. Auf Kreta,
in Kleinasien und nördlich vom Kaukasus ist sie z. B. ein lästiges Unkraut,
auch in Sicilien, wo Süßholz wild im Simetotal (bei Catania) wächst und in
Calabrien, wo man sie in der pianura di Sibari im Flußtal des Crati nördlich
von Corigliano und Rossano findet (RAVASINI).
An den feinen Nebenwurzeln finden sich Wurzelknöllchen (TSCHIRCH)
wie bei so vielen Papilionaceen.
G. glabra wächst noch auf Sandboden, verlangt aber reichliche
Bewässerung, gedeiht also am besten an Flußufern, in trockenen Flußbetten
oder im Überschwemmungsgebiet. Und so treffen wir denn sowohl das
wildwachsende Süßholz, wie auch die Kulturen fast ausschließlich in
Flußtälern: am Guadalquivir, am Ebro, am Mäander, am Ural und an der
Wolga, am Amu Darja und im Euphrat-Tigristale.
Wir dürfen jetzt wohl annehmen, daß das spanische und italienische
Süßholz (wie überhaupt das europäische) von Glycyrrhiza glabra L. α.
typica REG. et HERD., das russische von Glycyrrhiza glabra L. γ.
glandulifera REG. et HERD., das mesopotamische von Glycyrrhiza glabra L.
β. violacea BOISS. und das chinesische von Glycyrrhiza asperrima L. fil. α.
uralensis BOISS. (G. uralensis FISCH.) abstammt. Ob letztere auch das
Uralsüßholz liefert, ist sehr zweifelhaft (s. unten). Ich glaube es nicht. Auch
HOLMES hält (1910) die Stammpflanze für die gleiche wie die des
russischen Süßholz.

Pathologie. Prof. ED. FISCHER berichtet über die Schädlinge: Glycyrrhiza glabra wird von
einer Uredinee Uromyces Glycyrrhizae (RABH.) MAGNUS befallen, deren Mycel ganze Sprosse
durchzieht und an der Unterseite der Blätter Uredolager produziert. Aus dieser Form des
Auftretens ist zu schließen, daß das Mycel im Rhizom perenniert (s. P. MAGNUS, Über das
Auftreten eines Uromyces auf Glycyrrhiza in der alten und in der neuen Welt. Berichte der
deutschen botan. Gesellschaft 1890).
