Useful Tips For Drafting A Good Title For A Research Paper:

1. The title needs to be simple and direct.


2. It should be interesting and informative.
3. It should be specific, accurate, and functional (with essential “keywords”).
4. It should be concise, precise, and should include the main theme of the paper.
5. It should not be misleading or misrepresentative.
6. It should not be too long or too short (or cryptic).
8. It should avoid nonstandard abbreviations and unnecessary acronyms (or technical jargon).
9. Title should SPICED, that is, it should include Setting, Population, Intervention, Condition,
End Point, and Design.
10. Place of the study and sample size should be mentioned only if it adds to the scientific value
of the title.
Important terms/keywords should be placed in the beginning of the title.
11. Descriptive titles are preferred to declarative or interrogative titles.
12. Authors should adhere to the word count and other instructions as specified by the target
research.

Sample Titles (with Comments)

Title: “Comparison of Pediatric Risk of Mortality III, Pediatric Index of Mortality 2, and
Pediatric Index of Mortality 3 Scores in Predicting Mortality in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit”
Comment: Long title (28 words) capturing the main theme; site of study mentioned.

Title: “Study of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit”


Comment: The words, “study of” can be deleted.

Title: “Clinical Profile, Co-Morbidities & Health Related Quality of Life in Pediatric Patients
with Allergic Rhinitis & Asthma”
Comment: Optimum number of words; population and intervention mentioned.

Title: “The Effect of Online Schooling to the Academic Grades of General Academic Strand
Students of San Vicente National High School”
Comment: Optimum number of words; clear and concise.

Title: “Home Factors: Its Effect on the Academic Performance of Students in Bekuran High
School”
Comment: Good title, interesting, specific, and precise.

Title: “Learning Strategies and Learning Beliefs of GAS Students”


Comment: Broad topic, need to narrow down.
