MENSTRUATION: the loss of the uterus lining through the vagina. Also called period.

MENSTRUAL CYCLE: the monthly pattern of the thickening and loss of the uterus lining.

1. Menstruation.
Period starts. The thick, spongy
lining of the uterus breaks down and is
lost through the vagina. Most of the lining
is shed in the menstrual flow. Uterus
muscles contract and can hurt. Day 1
– day 5.

2. Follicular phase.
One of the ovaries prepares to release
an egg. The uterus lining starts to grow
thicker again. Day 6 – day 10.

3. Ovulation.
The egg cell is released from the ovary around day 14 of the cycle. The lining of the
uterus becomes thick and spongy. Day 11 – day 18.

4. Luteal phase.
Uterus lining continues to thicken. The egg cell was not fertilised, so it travels down the
oviduct into the uterus and dies. Day 19 – day 28.
