CHAPTER- 4
Force and pressure

1. Define force.
2. What are the different ways in which force can be exerted on an object?
3. Write various effects of force and an activity to explain each of them.
4. Give an example when applied force does not change the state of rest of a body.
5. What happens when the applied force acts on a body?
a) In the direction of motion
b) In the direction opposite to the direction of motion
c) At an angle to the direction of motion
6. Name the parameters that determine the magnitude of force needed.
7. What are the various parameters that are needed to specify the force completely?
8. Differentiate between: - a) balanced and unbalanced force b) contact and non-contact force
9. Define various types of non-contact and contact forces.
10. Define thrust and pressure.
11. Write S.I. unit of pressure and the factors on which it depends.
12. Write an activity to show the effect of area on pressure.
13. Define hydrostatic pressure and write its properties.
14. Write applications of decreasing pressure by keeping the force constant.
15. Write an activity to show that liquid pressure: -
a) Varies with depth
b) Acts perpendicular to the base
c) At the same depth is the same in all directions
16. Write factors on which the pressure exerted by a liquid depends.
17. Name the force that holds the air around us.
18. Define atmosphere and atmospheric pressure.
19. Why do we not feel the large atmospheric pressure acting on us?
20. Write an activity to show: -
a) Existence of atmospheric pressure
b) Estimation of atmospheric pressure using air sucker
21. Give reasons: -
a) Breathing becomes difficult on mountains
b) Nose bleeding might occur at high altitude
c) Mountaineers carry oxygen cylinders with them
d) Cabins of air planes are pressurized
22. How are wind and storm formed?
23. Write the factors on which air pressure depends.
24. Write the applications of atmospheric pressure.
25. Rohan pours some hot water in a plastic bottle and closes its lid tightly. After some time, the bottle
gets crushed inwards. Discuss briefly the reason for such a deformation.
26. A rubber balloon is stretched tightly over one end of a long plastic pipe, the pipe is then held vertically
and water is gradually poured in it. State the change that we would observe in the bulge of the balloon.
Give reason for the same.
27. How do we find the net effect of two unbalanced forces which are: - i) acting in the same direction?
ii) acting in the opposite direction?
28. State the effect (if any) of two balanced forces: - i) on the state of rest or motion of the object. ii)
shape or size of the object.
29. Give reason: -
a) When equal forces are applied on a car and a loaded truck, the car picks up speed faster.
b) It is easy to cut a fruit with sharp knife than with a blunt knife.
30. State the possible effects of
a. Equal and opposite balanced forces on a given object
b. Unbalanced forces on a given object
31. List any three effects which can be caused by a force on an object.
32. Name the nature and kind of force present in the following activities: -
a. An apple falling from a tree
b. A bicycle moving on a road after the rider stops pedaling it
33. Why does the number and intensity of storms increase during the summer season?
34. Take a tin can/ make two holes at two different points (one at lower end and one of upper end) along a
vertical line in the tin. Fill the tin can with water.
a. From which hole does the water emerge out farther?
b. Give reason for your answer.
c. Name one more factor on which pressure of the liquid depends.
35. State the effects of forces observed in the following two cases: -
a. A batsman hits a cricket ball for a six
b. A goal keeper saves a goal by grasping the ball
36. Give an example that illustrates that change in temperature may cause a change in atmospheric
pressure.
37.Read the given paragraph carefully and answer the questions that follow-

Gravity is the earth’s attractive force. The force of gravity attracts physical objects towards the earth’s
center. Because of the force of gravity, we fall down when we jump from building. The force of gravity or
gravitational force is greater near the earth’s surface & becomes less while going up or away from the surface
of the earth. When we throw an object up it is due to the force of gravity it falls down. This force of gravity is
dependent upon 3 factors such as-

1.The mass/ weight of the massive object

2.The mass/ weight of the smaller body &
3.The separation among the two (this distance is measured in terms of their geometrical centers).
A. Classify the following as contact and non -contact force
1.Frictional force2 Gravitational force3 Muscular force 4 Electrostatic force
B. Define Frictional force.
C. Write any one point to distinguish between balanced and unbalanced force.
D. Equal and opposite forces are acting on a wooden block. What is the magnitude of net force acting
on the block?
