HSE ALERT – Drive to Stay Alive - 12th June 2013

DRIVE TO STAY ALIVE

The purpose of the HSE Alert is to inform operators of their responsibilities when operating light vehicles (pickup trucks).

A serious injury resulting from a light vehicle accident can change your life and have a lasting effect on your family. To reduce the
possibility of accidents be aware and take action on the following items.

• M aintenance – Vehicle operators are responsible for scheduling required maintenance and services for their assigned
vehicle. Each vehicle is required to have an inspection sticker located on the driver’ s side door. If your vehicle is due for a
service, or you have a maintenance issue, please inform your Supervisor/ Manager and take your vehicle to the Dome to be
serviced.
• Fatigue. - Don’ t drive when tired. Recognize the signs of fatigue.
o Feeling cramped/ fidgety or your eyelids are heavy.
o What is your state of mind? (Aggressive, dreamy / occupied, great, etc...)
• Daily I nspection Reports – Before using any vehicle, operators are required to complete “ Parte de Verificacion
Diaria” every day and be familiar with the vehicle. E.g., how do you select 4WD? Do you know how to use the tire jack?
Perform a thorough inspection. If your vehicle has a mechanical issue, do not operate the truck and report any defects to
your Supervisor/Manager. If you have issues with your head lights or brake lights, do not operate the truck during hours of
darkness. Wait until visibility improves, then take it to the Dome for repair.
Your completed document needs to be turned into the Equipment Section (BEASA 2) or to the dome daily. Be sure to
include the internal Techint inventory number AND license plate number.
• Safe Operability of Vehicles – Make sure you have a proper field of vision when operating the vehicle. Clean
away dirt, snow, or ice from the windshield, windows, mirrors, back window, and lights.
o ALWAYS – Obey Speed limits and wear your seat belts – Both Front and Back seats, and drive to road conditions.
o NEVER – Speed, carry excessive passengers, operate vehicle if unlicensed or leave vehicles/ trucks engine´s running
if vehicle is unattended.
• Vehicle Handling - Every vehicle is different and has different handling characteristics.
• Wild Life - Be aware that wild life can be on the roads on the mine area. Report any wild life in difficulty. If you run
over wildlife report it to the Fluor Techint CM Environmental Dept.
• Wet, Snowy or I cy Conditions - 4WD high should be engaged on site roads whenever it has rained or the road is
wet. If you drive in snowy conditions, or on icy roads. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You
should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you. Avoid sudden turns of the
steering wheel or abrupt braking and accelerating as this can also cause you to skid. If your wheels start to lock up, ease
off the brake. When approaching an icy hill, pick a path that will allow the most traction. Head for unpacked snow or
powder where you'll get a better grip. Build speed gradually before reaching the hill and stay in a low or middle gear, and
use the same method when traveling down a hill. Use snow chains when required.
