1.0 Introduction

Architecture in Mosque is known for it’s uniqueness. The architecture of a mosque is shaped
most strongly by the regional traditions of the time and place where it was built. As a result,
style, layout, and decoration can vary greatly. Nevertheless, because of the common function
of the mosque as a place of congregational prayer, certain architectural features appear in
mosques all over the world. From Indonesia to the United Kingdom, the mosque in its many
forms is the quintessential Islamic building and Malaysia is one of it.

Malaysia is well known for the construction of beautiful and enchanting mosques as well as
being one of the 'niche' tourism products that received encouraging response from non-Muslim
countries such as Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Nowadays, the mosque is not only a house of
worship, but also serves as a social medium that creates interaction between tourists and
locals on a positive picture of Islam and Malaysia.

As the building in Malaysia keep evolving so does the Mosque. Nowadays, Mosque in
Malaysia constructed with raw materials finishes as an act to protect the environment clean
from any excess waste construction materials.Natural lighting and ventilation plays a big part
in this eco-friendly building. Architects use these element in it’s building as a part of it’s passive
design strategy and reduce electrical usage in the building.
2.0 Building Compost

The building located in Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru. This cubic shape mosque was
designed by Razin Architects. This mosque has a unique architecture and design themed
"industrial & eco-friendly". This mosque covers an area of 3 acres and its land is endowed by
UEM Land Berhad. The construction cost of the mosque is said to amount to RM3.89 million
and RM1 million from it is the result of public donations while the rest is contributed by an
individual whose identity is kept secret. The mosque, which was built in the shape of a Kaaba
in Mecca and has an environmentally friendly interior design, is like the Al-Irsyad Mosque in
Bandung, Indonesia which has received various building design awards in the neighbouring
country.

2.1 Environment
Daing Mosque originally come from an old Surau, the red and black building which can
be seen in the second picture. The new white and gray building comes after the renovation
when the population of resident in the neighbourhood increasing by year. The resident of the
area approximately 40% are Malay, 30% are Chinese, 20% are Indian and 10% are others
ethnic. Even though there is a new building to perform obligation, the old Surau building still
has it function. The old building now works as a place for registered small shops in opening
their small business in there. There are even a barber shop been open there for a while.

3.0 M&E System

Mechanical systems can include elements of infrastructure, plant and machinery, tool and
components, heating and ventilation and so on. Electrical systems might include, power supply
and distribution, telecommunications, computing instrumentation, control systems and so on.

Clearly there is a great deal of overlap, with many systems including both mechanical and
electrical components, hence the term M&E. Combined mechanical and electrical engineering
courses are available, with joint accreditation between the Engineering Council, Institution of
Engineering and Technology (IET) and Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The terms 'M&E' / 'M&E engineer' are often taken to be interchangeable with 'building
services'/ 'building services engineer' and M&E engineers will often hold a degree in
mechanical, electrical or M&E engineering. Chartered Engineer status can be awarded
through the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

Building services are the systems installed in buildings to make them comfortable, functional,
efficient and safe and might include the Building control systems.
3.1 Metric Chaos (TNB)

Matric chaos basically contain one or more incoming (out-going) and out-going circuits
controlled by high voltage switching devices and meet in one or more of the same base bar
systems. Matric Chaos function as a form a 'nodal point' where power can be changed or
distributed from it to another substation or user, allows switching in or out of other parts of a
system and the method of faulty parts in a system is isolated by means of switching and the
supply of electricity can be continued through other circuits.

Diagram shows location of Metric Chaos in the location plan.

3.2 Compact Sub (Sub Station)

Compact sub stations known as compact secondary substations (CSS) are used for energy
transformation in secondary distribution network from MV to LV or LV to MV. CSS is a type
tested and arc tested assembly comprising an enclosure containing medium voltage (MV)
switch gear, distribution transformers, low voltage (LV) switchboards, connections and
auxiliary equipment to supply low voltage energy from medium voltage systems. The CSS is
take current from existing lighting or known as INCOMING POWER SUPPLY (TNB) distribute
to Compact Sub substation.

4.0 Layout Plannings

The building consists essential elements same like others mosque around the world.
Mimbar, Serambi, Prayer Hall, Mihrab and Minaret. For Daing Mosque, the Minaret (tower) is
not use as a speaker in reverberate the Adzan to the entire neighbourhood but use as a Cell
Tower to accept signal from the neighbourhood.

4.1 First Floor

On the first floor, there we can see the natural lighting and ventilation being adapt in the
building design in it’s area. Raw finishes also can be seen at the wall and floor from entrance
to it’s second floor. The electricity is distributed from the Compact Sub to the Main Switch Box
in the first floor.

4.1.1 Mimbar

Mimbar area is located next to the mihrab area. At the bottom of the mimbar there is a
special The main switchboard (MSB) for ihram area. The main switchboard (MSB) is the
electrical device that is necessary for the supply, accounting and redistribution of power. MSB
protects the network from increasing current (overload), short circuit and current leak.
Additionally, the device enables you to record energy consumption (if equipped with a MSB
registration), as well as to make the control of the power distribution using the installed control
and measuring equipment. Equipment is mounted in the MSB as a functional blocks in the
panels, which are interconnected by mechanical contacts and electrical connections. One
additional object of the MSB is the ability to automatically switch from the primary power
supply channel to backup in case of problems with the supply of electricity.

Figures show the Mimbar area and switch box at the bottom of Mimbar area.
4.1.2 Serambi

The Serambi has a natural ventilation because it is an open space. It uses downlights as an
artificial lighting at night. Fans are installed on each column to keep the place cool during hot
weather. Security cameras were installed here and there to ensure the safety of the people.
Tiles were used as the flooring to keep the floor cool.

4.1.3 Prayer Hall

Some part uses bricks and most of them uses glass walls to secure natural lighting. The
Prayer Halls are 2 stories high. So it uses FCU Ducting to keep the area cooled. Chandeliers
are used in the middle of the hall as artificial lighting. Carpet for comfort and used as the prayer
mat.

4.1.4 Mihrab

In Mihrab, bricks was used as the walls. Bricks offers better insulating capabilities compared
to other building materials. It helps maintaining the interior temperature. As for the feature wall,
wood are used to create an aesthetic feeling. Mihrab shares the FCU Ducting in the prayer
hall.

4.1.5 Imam Room

Imam room is located next to the mihrab. The wall inside the imam room is red brick which
helps to cool a space. Imam room is a room that controls the use of microphone and speakers
for this mosque. In the imam room there is a public address system (PA system) and also a
mixer. A public address system (PA system) is an electronic system comprising microphones,
amplifiers, loudspeakers, and related equipment. It increases the apparent volume (loudness)
of a human voice, musical instrument, or other acoustic sound source or recorded sound or
music. PA systems are used in any public venue that requires that an announcer, performer,
etc. be sufficiently audible at a distance or over a large area. there is also a security system
that controls and monitors the entire mosque area.

Figures shows activities in Imam Room and Public Address System (PA System) in
Imam Room.

4.2 Second Floor

On the second floor there is a space for women to pray, it is also used as a multipurpose
room. In this room the walls use red stone. on the front of the room there is a large glass wall
that can see on the first floor, while getting natural light from the sun. there is a Switch Box
distribute to downlight, fan, aircond, speakers and other electrical use at this level.

5.0 Air Conditioning & Mechanical Ventilation System (ACMV)
Ducted air conditioning has several advantages over the split system. It allows you to set
a different temperature for each area of your building which can come in handy if you prefer to
sleep in a cooler area for example, while you want a higher temperature for your prayer hall.
This feature is also convenient for individuals with asthma or other health conditions.
Regulating the system for every area separately is what we call zoning, and it is only possible
with a ducted air conditioning system.

Moreover, ducted systems will not mess up the interior of your building. All you can see
are grilles installed on the ceiling. Split system, on the other hand, requires installation on the
wall.

5.1 Daikin

Daikin Chilled Water Fan Coil Units are capable of flexibly adapting to a wide variety
of space requirements, installation configurations, and usage applications. Therefore, it is
good for large spaces in Daing Mosque.

5.2 York

The York Inverter Y-series air-conditioners uses the latest intelligent inverter technology
to deliver up to 50% energy savings and comes with Bio-Shield to improve your indoor air
quality. The York Inverter Y-series is available in 1.0hp to 1.5hp, depending on the model. This
is the newest York Inverter technology model, suitable for any homes, offices or workplace.

6.0 Safety And Security

Safety is top priority for the visitors. Therefore, all activities in the mosque area are
monitored through the security room (Imam Room).A CCTV (closed-circuit television) system
allows the use of videos cameras to monitor the interior and exterior of a property, transmitting
the signal to a monitor or set of monitors. Outside of being able to monitor the mosque, CCTV
cameras are an excellent deterrent for burglars. Just like seeing a mounted alarm system, an
intruder seeing cameras may decide that it’s easier and safer to move elsewhere. It’s much
better to prevent intrusion than dealing with it after it’s occurred.

6.1 Camera

Security is important in one important building. As a part of security, cameras are use to
record movement and any suspicious behaviour that occurs in the building. This mosque use
wireless and dome cameras model.

Figures show installed camera in Daing Mosque and model of the camera.
6.2 Screen Monitor

Surveillance system are installed in every corner of the building. All of the cameras can be
monitored from the Imam Room at the first floor. Screen Monitor Is placed in the Imam Room.
The cameras is on for 24 hours, these ensure safety for those who entered the building
everyday.

Figure shows screen monitor in Imam Room.

7.0 Services And Maintenance

Human is not perfect so does the technology. There is possibilities there will be blackout or a
circuit problem in the electrical system. Therefore, if there is a problems in the electrical circuit,
technician will analyze the problem and repair it from the Main Switch Box (MSB) under the
stair. The MSB is placed in an open space is because to ease the technician to see the switch
in dim conditions. The technician can works easier and the problems will be fix faster. The
Surge Protection Devices (SPD) Compartment works as a protection if there is a lightning
strike, this box will malfunction first.

Figures show the Main Switch Box and Surge Protection Devices (SPD) Compartment in
Daing Mosque.
8.0 Fire Hydrant System

Every building, before it was built need the Fireman approval before starting a construction.
This approval is essential for the fireman to access the fire protection system for the building.
One of the systems are Fire Hydrant System. Fire Hydrant System is a safety measure or
emergency equipment required in some buildings that comprises a series of components that
when assembled together provide a source of water to assist fire authorities in a fire.

In Daing Mosque, there is no sprinkler system because Razin Architects already calculated
that the building is impossible for fire to spread because of it passive design strategy and
constructions materials. Concrete, glass, red clay brick plus the raw finishes make the building
become a poor heat conductor. Despite the possibility that the building will not catch a fire,
Razin Architect still take precaution by installing the fire hydrant system for the safety of the
user.

Figure shows a fire hydrant near the mosque area.

9.0 Conclusion And Suggestion.

9.1 Conclusion

In conclusion, Daing Mosque is a mosque that Muslims always visit to perform the obligatory
prayers. in precautionary measures to ensure visitors and employees of this mosque have a
good security and tolerance system.

Like other buildings, it is important to concerned about hydrants and water sprinklers to
prevent unwanted incidents related to fire.

In terms of electricity, Daing Mosque is a building that is very concerned of electrical safety
in the building. this building has a very systematic m&e system. Main Switch Box as the first
switch at the ground floor, Switch box in each floor and metric chaos as a backup plan in case
MSB and SB are damaged. for example, if this mosque is struck by lightning. the first thing
damaged was the Switch Box on the second floor while the Switch Box in the first floor and the
Main Switch Box in the ground floor did not suffer any damage.

9.2 Suggestion

Sprinkler is suggested to be placed at the first and second floor to avoid any unwanted
accidents which involves fire. Daing Mosque fully relies on fire hydrant which is located outside
of the mosque. Any small fire caused on the inside of the mosque cannot be fully extinguished.
By suggesting a sprinkler in the mosque, it will benefit the mosque. In terms of extinguishing
the fire before it spreads.
