The quote highlight “the first major battle” for Australian troops as at that period, Australian
was a country did not know much about the war, they haven’t faced to any big war before the
Gallipoli Campaign and before they became the Great British’s allied. They did not have
experience for war, armed forces at that time were incomplete, but so many people were
volunteers for the campaign. Why did they want to be volunteers? In the Australia troop, there
were so many men who were volunteers to enlisted, those volunteers came from different
strata of society and this was one of the signs that portray the Australian’s pride and
determination in the war. They wanted to enlist, because they thought war was just an
adventure, war would a chance for male far from home, learn many new things, have new
discovery, chance for them to travel to another country in Europe, but they did not think they
could face with the boundaries of life and death, they did not think they might never return
their home and family. Then, when they realised the reality of war, when they faced with the
life and death situation, they did not afraid, they did not falter, they still tried to fight, fight for
the motherland which was Great British, fight for independence, and fight for themselves in
the hope that the battle would end to return to their family. Then when many of the soldiers
were injured and died, they still did not fear and retreat, they fought until they could not.

In Charles Bean’s publication Anzac to Amiens, he wrote “Anzac stood, and still stands, for
reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship, and
endurance that will never own defeat.” And the Australian poet Banjo Paterson wrote "We're
All Australians Now" in 1915 about what the ANZAC had done for Australia, including the
verse “The mettle that a race can show Is proved with shot and steel, And now we know what
nations know And feel what nations feel.”

Obviously, before the ANZAC started the campaign, they had training for many moths for the
battle, they planned to win, they planned to push the Ottoman Empire but the due to the battle
was take place on the Ottoman Empire homeland, they had the advantage of the army and
number of weapons as they could refill soldiers when the Turks died. That was hard for the
ANZAC to win the battle, with some solders, the beginning of the battle was the end of their
life and with some other, the battle was the devastation and brutality world with blood and
sweats. Serious injury, wounded, death, the conditions were as bad as you could image,
many soldiers were not died because of fighting, gun, bullets but they died because of
diseases in their trenches. Offered with many harsh and difficult things, the ANZAC would
never give up, they did not think about surrender the enemy, they did not think about run
away when so many of their soldiers teammate lay down in the battle, they looked at their
teammate’s corps, they would probably feel pain and more homesick, they would probably
hope to back home, but those things were not make them step back, those things made them
even stronger and fight “Anzac stood, and still stands” with all they had because at that time,
they did not have anything else to lose. They fought and fought, as Banjo Paterson display in
his writing, the ANZAC showed their mettle through the battle, his quote portrayed the feeling,
what might they feel during the battle. All of those things depict the ANZAC full of energy,
they were brave, they were strong. After 8 months of the Gallipoli Campaign, there were over
8700 Australia soldiers and 2779 New Zealand soldiers died, that is a large number and
shows the painful of the war.

This shows that today, people are always remembering about the Gallipoli Campaign, they
remember about what the ANZAC did for their independence and peace. In the campaign,
the most successful part was the evacuation in mid-December 1915, they were leaving
and left a lot of painful, a lot of sacrifices, loss in the Gallipoli peninsula. The plan to
evacuated was very carefully “To hide the fact that they were leaving, they rigged up
some rifles to fire at random. They did this by attaching tins to the rifles’ trigger
mechanisms with string. When the tins filled with water dripping from other tins
suspended above, their weight caused the triggers to be pulled and the rifles to fire.
This tactic became known as the ‘ghost guns of Gallipoli’. Soldiers also carefully
wrapped the horses’ hooves in cloth to muffle the sound of their leaving. The last
Australian soldiers were evacuated overnight on 19–20 December.” Because of the
silence leaving of the ANZAC, many people admire their plan, people don’t consider
withdrawal was the shamed, the ANZAC decided to leave because they did not want
to lost more soldiers, they did not want to see more soldiers get injury, their plan was
really successful and made the enemy which was the Ottoman Empire surprised
about how did leave without any vestige. After many difficulties, the ANZAC could
back to their homeland, they have been through many pain, loss, their fought with all
their heart, they were ready to die for their country’s peace, for their mother land all
