Assignment 02:
Indus river:
The longest and the largest river in Pakistan is the Indus River. Around two-thirds of
water supplied for irrigation and in homes come from the Indus and its associated
rivers.
John Marshall was the first researcher to use the term, 'Indus Valley
Civilization'. Indus Valley Civilization spread from the year 2500 – 1750 BC
according to radio-carbon dating.23-Mar-2022

IMPORTANT OF INDUS RIVER:

The Indus basin delta is an important source of
water supply for a country like Pakistan dependent upon agrarian economy. In this regard
elucidate what are the significant water resources of this vast delta benefiting Pakistan’s
agricultural sector and what measurements have been taken to utilize the water resources
more effectively.

SIGNIFICIANT:

The Indus basin delta receives water from three main sources: the Indus River, the
Kabul River, and the Jhelum River. The Indus River is the primary source of water for
the delta, and it provides water for irrigation, drinking, and other uses. The delta also
receives water from the Kabul River, which is a major tributary of the Indus, and the
Jhelum River, which is another important tributary.

To utilize the water resources more effectively, the Pakistani government has taken
several measures, including the construction of dams and canals to manage and
distribute the water. The construction of dams has helped to store water during the
monsoon season and release it during the dry season when the water supply is
scarce.

The government has also established an extensive network of canals to distribute

water to the agricultural lands. The canals transport water from the Indus River to the
farmlands in Punjab and Sindh provinces, which are the two main agricultural regions
of Pakistan.
In addition, the government has implemented policies to promote water
conservation and efficient use of water in agriculture. The government has
encouraged farmers to adopt modern irrigation techniques such as drip and sprinkler
irrigation, which use less water and are more efficient than traditional flood irrigation
methods.

Overall, the Indus basin delta is a vital source of water for Pakistan's agrarian
economy, and the government has taken measures to manage and distribute water
more effectively to ensure sustainable agricultural production.
