WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING–I
(Civil Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answering the question in Part-A is compulsory
3. Answer any THREE Questions from Part-B
*****
PART –A (22 Marks)
1. a) Discuss the relative merits and de-merits of recording and non recording rain gauges. [4M]
b) Draw a typical infiltration curve and indicate the various components on it. [4M]
c) Discuss briefly the method of stream gauging by velocity area method by using [4M]
current meter.
d) Describe different flood control measures to be taken at the time of flood. [4M]
e) Discuss about Darcy’s law. [3M]
f) What are the uses of rainfall – runoff modeling? [3M]

PART –B (48 Marks)

2. a) Describe the principle of working of recording and non – recording rain gauges with [8M]
neat sketches.
b) The annual rainfalls at 7 rain gauge stations in a basin are 60, 90, 65, 45, 20, 90 and [8M]
70 cm respectively. What is the percentage accuracy of the existing network in the
estimation of average depth of rainfall over the basin? How many additional gauges
are required if it is desired to limit the error to only 10%?

3. a) Explain the use of Lysimeter in measuring Evapotranspiration. [8M]

b) A 6 hr storm produced rainfall intensities of 7, 18, 25, 12, 10, and 3 mm/hr in [8M]
successive one hour intervals over a basin of 800 sq.km. The resulting runoff was
observed to be 2500 hectare-meters. Determine ᶲ - index for the basin.

4. a) Explain various empirical formulae, curves and tables for estimating the Runoff. [6M]
b) Following table gives the ordinates of 2 hr- unit hydrograph. Find the ordinates of [10M]
flood hydrograph if depth of rain fall excess is 10 cm, consider constant base flow of
10 m3/sec.
Time (Hr) 2 4 6 8 10 12 14
Ordinates of 2 Hr-UH (m3/s) 0 10 20 30 20 10 0

5. a) Explain the causes and effects of flood. [4M]

b) Describe the various steps involved in the Inflow- Storage- Discharge method of [8M]
reservoir routing.
c) Distinguish between channel and reservoir routing. [4M]

rate of 100 lit/min. The steady state draw down observed in two wells located at 10 m
and 50 m distance from the centre of the well are 3 m and 0.05 m respectively.
Compute the Transmissivity and permeability of the aquifer.
b) How do you estimate yield from an open well by recuperation test method? [8M]

7. a) Explain the Nash’s conceptual model for IUH and derive the equation for IUH. [8M]
